Perhaps the most underrated character in WandaVision with the most compelling storyline is Monica Rambeau. Monica originally made an appearance in comic books in the 80's thanks to legendary artist John Romita Jr. We see Monica Rambeau given fresh wind in her sails with her storyline in WandaVision coupled with the incredible acting of Teyonah Parris (who is set to reprise the role in Captain Marvel 2).

While fans are excited to see Monica Rambeau become a much-needed addition to the MCU, it's worth taking a re-cap of WandaVision to examine Monica's development and progression, especially when it comes to her entering the Hex.

10 Monica Became A Sitcom Character

Monica as a sitcom character.

Monica first entered the Hex while she was investigating it was Jimmy Woo. The most literal way Monica changed was when she became part of Wanda's scripted reality as a sassy sitcom sidekick, named Geraldine. While Wanda felt it was strange to see Monica appear in the Bewitched version of Wanda's spell, she welcomed Monica into her happily ever after storyline. Monica played the part well, whether it was a 1960's housewife or the sassy friend. Monica was the first, and one of the few, S.W.O.R.D agents who got the full experience of being cast in WandaVision. She was great until she broke character by mentioning Ultron.

9 Monica Learned How To Assist Giving Birth

This is the moment where Geraldine stole the show. In the third Brady Bunch-themed episode, Wanda is well along into her pregnancy that had been progressing at an unusually rapid rate. Geraldine, who now went by Foxy, came over to complain about her temp job while Wanda went into labor. Even though Wanda created this alternate simulation and a lot of what Geraldine was experiencing came from Wanda's imagination, Monica still got the training of delivering twin boys. Hex or no Hex, this will be a skill Monica will always be able to carry with her.

8 Monica Deepens Her Empathy

When Monica Rambeau's Aerospace Engineer Friend Didn't Turn Out To Be Reed Richards

The subject of grief is a prevailing theme in WandaVision. Being in the Hex helped Monica gain an understanding as to why Wanda created the Hex in the first place. Wanda suffered devastating losses between her parents, her brother, and Vision. Monica, who was taken during the infamous Blip, lost her mother, one of the closest people in her life.

At the season finale, after Agatha is defeated, Wanda and Monica discuss Wanda's decision to create the hex, which she put an end to. Instead of chiding Wanda for hypnotizing an entire town to the point of imprisonment, Monica empathizes saying that "if she could bring her mom back she would do the same thing." Going forward, Monica will have gained a new level of empathy living through Wanda's Hex.

7 Monica Became Very Clever

After the incident where she blew her cover and got forced out of the Hex, it seemed Monica became a little more savvy the second time around. She was captured by Pietro after she found Agatha's basement and he used his super-speed to make sure she didn't leave... for a little bit. Monica used her detective skills to find out Pietro wasn't really Pietro but a Westview resident named Ralph Bohner, possibly an aspiring actor due to his headshot.

Monica also realized that Pietro was under Agatha's spell with a necklace he was wearing. Once she ripped it off the spell broke. This is only possible with someone who knew how to navigate reality and the Hex.

6 Monica Became Intangible

One of Monica's powers that appeared from her experience with the Hex was the ability to become intangible. She can mold her physical form into an object or an airwave. We see Monica develop this ability as she pushes through the Hex a second time to reason with Wanda and stop Hayward's plan. Few others may have been able to cross the Hex like this but Monica was able to morph through the barrier of the Hex and discover the power she possesses.

5 Monica's DNA Had Been Altered

Monica's molecular structure quite literally changed only after going through the Hex twice. Since the Hex was so new, S.W.O.R.D was still learning about its effects on humans and trying to grasp its full understanding. That's where scientific expert Darcy Lewis, a very underrated character in the show, comes in to provide answers. Darcy informs Monica that if she enters The Hex again there could be consequences as her whole cellular being has been altered from going through The Hex twice. Of course, Monica doesn't listen to this advice as she feels it's crucial to reach Wanda before Hayward does.

4 Monica Is More Outspoken Against Authority

Monica in WandaVision

Monica was never a pushover. She's always been a strong and intelligent captain who is determined to get the job done. We see that Monica is agreeable with Hayward when he demotes her to ground-based missions but that's at the request of her late mother. Once Monica experiences the Hex for herself she could not allow Hayward to push his narrative that Wanda is a terrorist, even going so far as to call him a coward for taking a militaristic approach to dealing with Wanda. It's still unclear why Hayward keeps Monica around, but the series shows that she is a much-needed thorn in his side as she will not follow the usual orders.

3 Monica Can Absorb Bullets

One crucial post-Hex change in Monica is the convenient ability to absorb bullets. We see this after Hayward infiltrates the Hex with S.W.O.R.D and faces off against Wanda, Vision, and their children. As Vision fights a duplicate of himself and Wanda confronts Agatha, the kids are left to take down the S.W.O.R.D agents. After the kids handle the military, Hayward blindsides them and shoots his gun at them with the intention to kill them. Monica leaps in front of the bullets at the last minute, absorbing the blow and making the bullets fall. This may be one of Monica's finest moments in the series.

2 Monica Metamorphose Into An Electro-Magnetic Being

WandaVision Monica Rambeau Spectrum Super Powers

While we're not given the full scope of her true powers, we do see the beginning of what is surely to set-up Monica's future in the MCU. When Jimmy and Monica reconvene with a remaining S.W.O.R.D base outside the expanded Hex, they're introduced to a rover that Monica agrees to drive through the Hex. The Rover however cannot go through the Hex without having it's entire structure rebuilt around Wanda's reality. Monica, against the advice of Jimmy and Darcy, goes through a third time.

We see a psychotropic sequence where Monica becomes possessed with an unknown power as her eyes change colors and her vision shows her the magnetic waves on power lines inside. This is arguably the most important change in Monica post-Hex.

1 Monica Becomes Courageous

Monica Rambeau WandaVision Finale

Throughout the series we see one constant character trait increase overtime in Monica. That character trait is bravery. Monica, in an attempt to justify her mother's memory, doesn't let any intimidating obstacles get in the way of what needs to be done. Whether it's standing up to Hayward, risking going back into The Hex despite being told not to, or having the guts to stand-up to Wanda and tell her the cold truth, Monica will not let fear get in the way of doing what's right. Monica's come a long way from the child that Captain Marvel met. Writers have stated that one of the things that WandaVision got right was introducing Monica as an empowered adult. After multiple viewings of the series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is truly better off with Monica around.
