WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 6, "All-New Halloween Spooktacular!," now streaming on Disney+.

In the latest episode of WandaVision, Halloween comes to Westview, leaving Wanda's family a bit divided on the night of the holiday. She's excited, as are the kids, but Vision seems more distracted with the degree of control being placed around town. However, as Wanda and Pietro hash it out over the costumes and just how to have fun, there's a hilarious yet deep-cutting flashback about what Halloween was like in Sokovia.

Wanda's wearing a spandex version of her costume from the comics, with Vision doing the same, but while they're enjoying each other's classic looks, Vision admits he has neighborhood watch duty. But he's lying — it's a cover up because he wants to investigate the bubble Wanda's created. Wanda is a bit crushed, as she wanted both of them to take Tommy and Billy on their first trick-or-treat venture. However, Pietro steps in, ready to be the kids' chaperone as Quicksilver.

As he ribs at Wanda's costume, she tells him she's dressed as a Sokovian fortune-teller. As they continue on about candy-grabbing and such, Pietro mentions how trick-or-treating was back in the day for them as kids. A flashback then reveals the young Maximoffs at the door of an elderly lady, who, instead of candy, gives them fish, from which they developed typhus.

Wanda apparently blocked it out, with Pietro joking about her suppressing that trauma. However, it does tie into the theme of the series, as she built Westview as a utopia to process her grief, which likely encompasses her childhood in war torn and poverty stricken Sokovia. The fact that gunshots and violence are heard in the background as young Wanda and Pietro trick-or-treat says it all — not to mention the lady tells them to "share" this fish.

The scene portrays how some countries have limited resources and aren't able to afford certain experiences, which impacts many children. Whereas America has privileged kids in suburbia having a great Halloween filled with candy and fun costumes, that's not a luxury Sokovians can afford. It speaks to why Wanda also wants Billy and Tommy to have a blast and why she's disappointed Vision's not spending the night with them. She simply wants the boys to have a Halloween she and Pietro never could.

This life of poverty made it that much easier for them to fall prey to Hydra and be weaponized against Avengers in Age of Ultron. Wanda and Pietro saw the heroes as terrorists from an oppressive and privileged world claiming to be freedom fighters for people they never helped socioeconomically. While the Halloween shenanigans are fun in this episode of WandaVision, they actually contribute greatly to the overall storyline, highlighting Wanda's troubled past.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
