WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 9, "The Series Finale," now streaming on Disney+.

Marvel's WandaVision wrapped up with a thrilling and emotional finale that sets the stage for the rest of the franchise's ambitious Phase Four. Fans who knew the standard Marvel routine and stuck around after the credits rolled were treated to two post-credits scenes that teased where the show's heroes might go next. Though the second scene was more ambiguous, the first leaves little doubt -- Monica Rambeau is most certainly on course to team up with Nick Fury in the upcoming Secret Invasion show.

The scene in question begins after Wanda departs Westview, with Jimmy Woo organizing the FBI's clean-up efforts. Monica is approached by an officer who requests she follow her into the nearby theater. Once inside and alone, the officer reveals herself to be a Skrull sent by an old friend of her mother's to arrange a meeting. When Monica asks where they would meet, the Skrull points upwards to the sky, leaving little doubt she is referring to Nick Fury.

Back in Spider-Man: Far From Home, yet another post-credits scene revealed that the Skrulls Talos and Soren had been filling in for Nick Fury and Maria Hill and that Fury was on a sort-of vacation aboard a Skrull ship in deep space. Fury has maintained a close relationship with Skrulls ever since the events of Captain Marvel, when he teamed with Talos and Carol Danvers to defeat Yon-Rogg and the Kree. In fact, Monica herself was a witness to most of these events, as the team used her and her mother Maria's home as a base of operations.

With Monica set to meet, and potentially work with the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., it's more likely than not that the scene is meant to set up Secret Invasion, an upcoming show Fury has already been confirmed to appear in. The show's name is a reference to a popular comic crossover event by Brian Michael Bendis, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales and Laura Martin. In the storyline, it is discovered that the shape-shifting Skrulls have secretly replaced many superheroes in a plot to invade the Earth.

Though the Skrulls that have appeared so far have been friendly towards Fury, Kevin Feige has teased that the alien species can have "a variety of moralities." This opens the door for a new group of Skrulls with more nefarious intentions that could be hiding in plain sight. The way the Skrull in WandaVision was able to lure Monica into an abandoned theater, or how Peter Parker was unaware he wasn't actually speaking with Fury, are both indications of just how dangerous the species' powers can be.

This set-up is in line with the production schedule of Secret Invasion, which has been fast-tracked to begin filming in mid-2021, with some outlets reporting an April 5th production start date. Monica would certainly be a valuable addition to Fury's squad, both due to her experience and her newfound powers, which could lead to her becoming Photon somewhere down the line. She could also factor into some of the backstory behind the Skrulls' motivations, as both she and the green-skinned aliens will most likely appear in Captain Marvel 2.

An event as major as the Skrull's deception is bound to have a major effect on the course of the MCU, as allies no longer know who they can trust. It certainly makes sense for Marvel to begin building up to such a consequential show as early as possible, and the post-credits scene has become Marvel's patented method for hyping their future properties.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes.
