WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen recently suggested the plot of the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film wouldn't make sense without the events that unfolded in the Disney+ series.
"Without WandaVision, Doctor Strange wouldn't make sense," Olsen told The Wrap in an interview about WandaVision's 23 Emmy nominations. "I do feel like it fully leads into where we find her. It feels totally connected to the series." Olsen's comments contrasts those made by Marvel head Kevin Feige, who previously stated that Multiverse of Madness works whether you've seen WandaVision or not.
While Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Stephen Strange was originally supposed to make a cameo in WandaVision, Feige said they ultimately decided that his appearance "would have taken away from Wanda." "...Which is what we didn't want to do," Feige said in early June. "We didn't want the end of the show to be commoditized to go to the next movie, or, 'Here's the white guy, 'let me show you how power works.' That wasn't what we wanted to say."
Fans will recall that WandaVision ended with Olsen's Wanda Maximoff finally accepting her identity as Scarlet Witch. The final episode also showed the Scarlet Witch exploring the Darkhold — aka the "book of the damned" — which appears to be an item that Doctor Strange and his sorcerers might have interest in.
Olsen's comments came more than a month after she confirmed that she wrapped filming her scenes as Scarlet Witch for the Doctor Strange sequel. "I just finished Doctor Strange 2," she said at the time. "I wrapped WandaVision in October on a Wednesday, and they flew me to London on a Friday."
The actor also recently revealed that Wanda will bring back her Sokovian accent in Multiverse of Madness, explaining, "After the experience she has in WandaVision, she goes back to an accent that's more true to her."
Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Cumberbatch and Olsen, as well as Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Xochitl Gomez. The film arrives in theaters March 25, 2022.
