WandaVision was Marvel’s first live-action streaming series for Disney+, bringing characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the small screen. In it, Wanda Maximoff, soon-to-be Scarlet Witch, brought Vision, the love of her life, back following his demise in Avengers: Infinity War. On top of that, the show also served as a partial origin story for Monica Rambeau.

In a recent interview, WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer talked about Monica Rambeau’s role in the series. She revealed there were originally several scenes focusing on Monica returning from the Blip, but these were ultimately cut for time. In the same way the government forced Bucky Barnes into therapy as part of his rehabilitation, Monica also saw a therapist concerning the loss suffered in her life. During the Blip, Monica’s mother died of cancer. After she returned, S.W.O.R.D. also grounded her and had her working Earth-based missions, which is how she ended up becoming a victim of Wanda's Hex. It was a lot to deal with, but WandaVision never really showed how Monica became the person who was the most empathetic towards Wanda.

According to Schaeffer, WandaVision is mainly about mental health, including Monica's: “We were like, ‘Well, we’ve got to have a therapist,’ and then realized that there’s not a lot of time in the pop-up [S.W.O.R.D.] base [outside Westview] for Monica to be stepping into her sessions at all.” While the cut is understandable, this is a tremendous loss for Monica Rambeau’s story in WandaVision. Without seeing her getting the help she needed after her traumatic experience of losing everything in the snap of a finger, viewers were left to fill in the dots of Monica’s story. Since she was also dealing with grief, it was easy to see how Monica could relate to Wanda losing her loved ones. At the same time, the show could've done more to flesh out this connection.

In WandaVision, Monica was never as well-rounded as she could have been. These additional scenes could have shown her development from a mourning daughter and victim of the Hex into the hero standing up for Wanda in the face of her superiors and stepping in front of bullets to save Wanda’s children.

It makes sense that WandaVision cut these scenes. The primary characters were Wanda Maximoff and Vision, with Agatha Harkness as the third lead in the series. Characters like Jimmy Woo, Darcy Lewis and Monica Rambeau were always going to get less screen time. However, Woo appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp and Darcy was in two Thor movies. Fans knew who they were and understood that they were there for lighthearted, comedic moments. Although fans did initially meet Monica in Captain Marvel, she was still a child in that film. Even with her upcoming appearance in The Marvels, audiences have been left to imagine how Monica became the S.W.O.R.D. agent seen in WandaVision. Since so much of her journey already happened offscreen, Monica should have received a few scenes dealing with her own trauma before confronting Wanda.

WandaVision is a series about how people deal with grief, namely Wanda and Monica. Wanda has been grieving through much of her life, from losing her parents to losing her brother to losing the man she loved. She snapped and took an entire town hostage in an attempt to get her happy ending. Monica also suffered loss, but audiences didn't actually get to see how she handled this. Her connection with Wanda could have been stronger if WandaVision had shown Monica dealing with her grief as Wanda dealt with her own.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes/Agatha Harkness. The series is available to stream on Disney+.
