The showrunner of WandaVision reveals how Thor: Ragnarok helped her new series come to life.

WandaVision creator and head writer Jac Schaeffer spoke with IndieWire about the acclaim her new show is receiving, but also revealed 2017's Thor: Ragnarok is one of her favorite Marvel projects. As Schaeffer says, the Taika Waititi film really broke new ground for the MCU and showed just how much the formula could be pushed. "That was really the movie, for me, that broke my brain," Schaeffer said. "I thought it was just so daring and so exciting. Smashing the mold, and taking all the colors and throwing them around."

Ragnarok essentially reinvented the Thor franchise, along with its lead and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. Those elements would carry over into 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and will naturally be present in Waititi's follow-up, Thor: Love and Thunder. For Schaeffer, the daring of the movie helped lay the groundwork for the genre-bending new Disney+ series.

"We’ve been very flattered that people think it’s so original and so unique, and in my mind, I’m like, ‘Well, there was Ragnarok and that was pretty crazy,'" Schaeffer said.

While Ragnarok broke new ground with its eccentric visuals and frenetic pace, WandaVision has pushed the MCU in all-new directions. From homaging TV sitcoms to metatextual references to setting the stage for future Marvel content like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the kickoff to Phase 4 may be cited in the future as an inspiration for numerous projects. And the series has no shortage of mysteries left to explore.

There's also a little DNA connecting the two franchises, as last week's episode brought back Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, who now has a doctorate in astrophysics. While she skipped out on Ragnarok given its cosmic setting, Dr. Lewis has already played a key role in S.W.O.R.D. understanding what exactly is happening to Wanda and Vision... or rather what Wanda may be doing to Vision. If what we've seen so far is any indication, WandaVision will quickly surpass Ragnarok as the weirdest MCU property.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
