WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision episode 4, "We Interrupt This Program," now streaming on Disney+.

In true Marvel Cinematic Universe fashion, WandaVision seamlessly weaves past characters and events into its storyline, adding depth to the canon and setting up Phase 4. One of the past events it recalls is the Snap — the event in Avengers: Infinity War where Thanos vanquishes half the world's population after the heroes fail to stop him. The Avengers return in Avengers: Endgame, each downtrodden at what transpired, trying to regain motivation to fight. But none of them seem more intent on stopping Thanos than Captain Marvel.

In Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers has a close relationship with Agent Nick Fury, one of those snapped by Thanos. It's been assumed that this is why she is so eager to get revenge on the Mad Titan. However, WandaVision Episode 4, "We Interrupt This Program," adds another layer of depth to her vendetta against the villain through the return of Monica Rambeau.

Monica changes Captain Marvel's suit to neon

Monica was first introduced in Captain Marvel as a child. She's the daughter of Maria Rambeau, Carol Danvers' best friend and fellow Air Force pilot. Carol and the young Monica had an unbreakable bond. Monica lovingly called the hero "Aunt Carol" and looked up to her. Carol dubbed Monica with the nickname "Lieutenant Trouble." Their fondness for each other was made clear throughout Captain Marvel, and Carol even let Monica choose the colors for her superhero suit in an endearing scene.

WandaVision Episode 2, "Don't Touch That Dial," reintroduces audiences to an adult Monica. However, the aforementioned Episode 4 reveals that she was "snapped" by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. In Avengers: Endgame, the heroes reversed the Snap and brought back the millions of people who were dusted, including Monica. Rushing among other panicked citizens in a hospital, Monica is blipped back to reality after five long years of absence.

Captain Marvel vs Thanos Avengers: Endgame

Captain Marvel already has an inclination towards justice, and the loss of two people closest to her — Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau — only fueled her hatred toward Thanos. Her intensity, focus and hunger for revenge were heightened in Avengers: Endgame. By revealing that Monica was snapped, WandaVision just added another layer to Captain Marvel's story and the greater MCU overall.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. A new episode debuts each Friday on Disney+.
