WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer recently divulged some details on the narrative and tonal importance of introducing Monica Rambeau through a post-Blip re-emergence.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Schaeffer talked to host Ash Crossan about using the opening scene of episode four, "We Interrupt This Program," to catch audiences up with Rambeau's adult self, played by Teyonah Parris, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) post-Avengers: Endgame continuity. After Crossan pointed out how this darker, almost traumatic presentation of what she dubbed the "unblippening" compared to Spider-Man: Far From Home's more jokey depiction of the Avengers' actions, the WandaVision creator explained that this shift in tone was deliberate on multiple levels.

"So our priority was introducing Monica. That was always what we wanted to do at the top of the show. And then second to that, our priority was the 180 of this episode being entirely separate from what we've seen," Schaeffer explained. "But we also wanted to answer the question of where are we in the MCU timeline, and this idea seemed to satisfy all of those things all at once. It's set up tonally that we're in a dramatic scenario, a more grounded scenario. We learn so much about Monica and what she's dealing with in that cold open. And then of course, it's always exciting to be able to approach MCU canon and shed new light on it."

First introduced as a child in Captain MarvelWandaVision provided some context on what Monica Rambeau has been up to since the 1990s. In addition to being a member of S.W.O.R.D., the government organization created by her mother Maria Rambeau, "We Interrupt This Program" tragically revealed that Maria died of cancer while Monica was missing. Following her time in the Westview, the show also hinted at Monica being on potentially estranged terms with Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, though the cause of this friction has yet to be addressed. Parris is currently set to reprise her MCU role for the upcoming film Captain Marvel 2 alongside Larson and future Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
