Despite not becoming the new President, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has been seen virtually everywhere this past week, thanks to a pervasive set of viral memes bearing his likeness. Now, the onetime presidential candidate has appeared in arguably the most unlikely place of all: a promotional piece for Marvel Studios' WandaVision.Series concept artist Andy Park inserted the neo-iconic image of Sanders into a promo piece Park had originally created well in advance of the Disney+ show and shared it on his Twitter page last week. The painting shows Vision and Wanda, played by Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen, seated in their idyllic American suburban home in their civilian guises, with the glow from their living room's television screen casting a shadow of their costumed selves. Sanders, bundled in his winter coat and now-infamous wool mittens, now sits off to the right in Park's modified illustration.

In his tweet, Park notes, "I couldn't resist ..." Park unveiled the original piece at Disney's last D23 Expo in 2019, after the Disney+ series had been announced.

A photograph taken at the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Joe Biden showed a socially distanced Sanders in attendance, seated in a folding chair and appropriately dressed for a typically chilly January day in Washington D.C. Before the day's end, Sanders' image had been photoshopped into countless other images such as movie scenes, album covers, historical moments and other notable photographs and subsequently went viral across social media for several days.

In the series, Wanda and Vision are not seen as superheroes, but instead are living a seemingly happy suburban life straight out of a number of classic American sitcoms. But there's an underlying and persistent sense that not everything in their world is as it seems. In the most recent episode "Now in Color," the couple's suburban town of Westview is revealed to be some manner of artificial, self-contained reality.

The nature of Wanda and Vision's circumstance has yet to be explained, but one fact is all but certain: Bernie Sanders isn't a part of it.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
