Warner Bros. has decided it's time to return to the Overlook Hotel, and has begun development of a prequel to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of The Shining by Stephen King. Deadline reports that former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara has been hired to write the script for The Overlook Hotel.

However, this isn't the only Shining-based project in the works. King decided to return to the world in his upcoming book Doctor Sleep, which follows Danny Torrance as an adult who uses his powers to help people in a nursing home. That is until he meets a 12-year-old girl with similar powers and a supernatural group called The True Knot out to get her. The book is scheduled to debut on Sept. 24.

A writer and producer for such television series as The Shield and Hawthorne, Mazzara was named showrunner of The Walking Dead following the surprise firing of Frank Darabont in July 2011. In December 2012, Mazzara announced he was leaving the hit AMC drama following “a difference of opinion about where the show should be going forward.”
