While work in the film and TV industry has ground to a halt due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, AMC revealed post-production has continued on The Walking Dead: World Beyond, with the spinoff "set to go."
According to Deadline, the World Beyond staff has been working on post-production during COVID-19 and the series is still on track for its fall premiere. AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll confirmed that despite the show's original delay into the fourth quarter, World Beyond is still moving forward. "We have made some adjustments, moved the Killing Eve premiere up a couple of weeks and, you’re probably aware, moved Walking Dead: World Beyond back into the fourth quarter," explained Carroll. "We’re finishing post on that, that will be set to go."
AMC's The Walking Dead: World Beyond follows in the footsteps of The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead as the third show in the network’s zombie family. The series was first announced in July 2018 and is said to focus on the first generation born into the zombie apocalypse. Writer and producer Matt Negrete is serving as showrunner alongside Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple. The story follows two sisters and two of their friends as they navigate the apocalypse. Sticking with The Walking Dead's themes, the synopsis teases, "Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever."
With The Walking Dead continuing to be one of the highest-rated shows on network television, the zombie series has come a long way since its premiere in 2010. The universe grew with Fear The Walking Dead in 2015, which is currently on hiatus ahead of Season 6. However, while both the main series and Fear The Walking Dead have continued sprawling stories across multiple seasons, World Beyond is taking a different approach and will consist of two 10-episode seasons.
Despite COVID-19 affecting Gimple's Walking world, things are still moving forward. As it stands, viewers are still waiting for The Walking Dead to air its Episode 16 of Season 10, which is now scheduled to air later this year. Despite Jeffrey Dean Morgan saying it's a f-----g mystery when work will start on Season 11, The Walking Dead: World Beyond still has a firm start date.
Created by Scott Gimple, Robert Kirkman and Matt Negrete, The Walking Dead: World Beyond stars Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Annet Mahendru, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston and Nico Tortorella. The series debuts on AMC in 2020.
