AMC has debuted a promo for Andrew Lincoln’s final episode of The Walking Dead, which teases the return of Jon Bernthal as Shane Walsh.

Beyond his lead role on Netflix’s The Punisher, Bernthal is best known for playing Shane in the first two seasons of The Walking Dead. As the friend and partner of Rick Grimes, Shane became one of the show’s first villains after his relationship with Lori Grimes grew more disturbing. Bernthal hasn’t appeared on the show since a cameo in 2012, but now he’s back for Rick’s swansong.

A promo for the Nov. 4 episode, “What Comes After,” is a trip down memory lane for The Walking Dead. and shows that Lincoln’s stoic deputy sheriff will be haunted by the ghosts of his past. Rick and Shane can be seen sharing a meal in their squad car, but it isn’t clear why he’d be hallucinating about his former colleague so long after their relationship came to a tragic end.

Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead ended with a cliffhanger, as Rick was thrown from his horse and seriously injured as two herds of walkers converged. The promo suggests that Rick will start to succumb to his wounds and begin hallucinating.

Hallucination episodes are nothing new to The Walking Dead, and fans may remember that the exit of Chad Coleman’s Tyreese in Season 5 used a similar technique of bringing back dead characters. Rick is no stranger to hallucinations himself, and has notably seen his visions of his dead wife Lori.

It’s already been confirmed that “What Comes After” will be Rick’s final episode, so it makes sense that a character as prominent as Shane returns to round off the past eight years of The Walking Dead.

It is no secret that Lincoln’s exit has been planned for a while, with Lincoln saying he even pitched the idea in Season 4. Even as The Walking Dead continues to slip in the ratings, new showrunner Angela Kang is pushing a new era of the show that no longer revolves around Lincoln as its lead. Whether Rick makes it out alive and rides off into the sunset or joins the rest of the deceased Grimes family, the next episode is promised to be a must-watch installment of The Walking Dead.

Find out when The Walking Dead “What Comes After” premieres Sunday, Nov. 4, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
