Lauren Cohan has confirmed the name of The Walking Dead's newest cast member as fans learn the name of Maggie Rhee's baby.

After what seems like an eternal pregnancy, audiences will finally get to see her bouncing bundle of joy in the upcoming ninth season of the AMC drama. Comic book readers already know Maggie named her baby Hershel, in tribute to her father, but will the show follow suit?

Appearing Sunday on The Walking Dead Season 9 preview, Cohan revealed, "We have baby Hershel, named after dad, and a big part of what Maggie is focusing on is building a world for him."

Creator Robert Kirkman has already joked about Maggie's 48-month pregnancy, but the Season 9 teaser trailer revealed the wait to meet the latest member of the Greene/Rhee family is nearly over.

Cohan said that although Maggie's aspirations have changed now that she's a mother, her feelings toward Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan will continue to be a sore point after the show's time jump. "A big part of her conflict this year is finding peace of mind with allowing Negan to live, and being a good leader, a good mother, and how she's going to let those two desires co-exist, essentially," she said.

Naming Maggie and Glenn's baby Hershel is a homage to Scott Wilson's role as the Greene patriarch on The Walking Dead. Similar to his comic book counterpart, adult Hershel was killed off by the Governor in Season 4's prison storyline. Although The Walking Dead has come a long way since then, and Maggie has slowly evolved into the leader of the Hilltop, the character is keen to remember where she came from.

As Season 9 heads into new territory and a more established world for The Walking Dead, the new narrative means that Baby Hershel will be about a year old when the show picks up. While producers have used the comic book as a rough blueprint for the series, Season 9 looks to be following Kirkman's story more closely. However, this gives no indication on what happens to Maggie or Hershel next.

Andrew Lincoln and Cohan are both set to bow out as Rick and Maggie in the upcoming season, leaving a big question mark over whether Baby Hershel's role on The Walking Dead will be a short-lived affair or if he will become the next Judith Grimes.

The Walking Dead returns Oct. 9 for its ninth season on AMC.
