AMC has teased the upcoming ninth season of The Walking Dead as "a new beginning" for the hit drama that will bring with it "a new world." Those phrases have meaning beyond references to the comic book storyline that followed "All Out War," and the time jump that comes with it, as the post-apocalyptic series will undergo seismic changes both in front of, and behind, the camera, with the impending departures of stars Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, and the addition of new showrunner Angela Kang.
All of those combine to make the first trailer for The Walking Dead Season 9 among the most anticipated reveals of Comic-Con International in San Diego.
While Lincoln's exit as Rick Grimes has been widely reported, AMC has yet to make an official statement. The closest we've come is creator Robert Kirkman's response on Thursday when asked whether Season 9 will be Lincoln's last: “It’s looking that way.” That alone will make today's Walking Dead presentation in Hall H a must-watch for fans.
But the trailer promises to reveal the state of the survivors' loose society in the time jump that follows the war against Negan and his Saviors. We know enough pages of the calendar have turned for roads and bridges to crumble, and for resources like fuel to be depleted.
"There’s a fun Western vibe that has emerged," Kang recently explained. "We are going into a period where a lot of the things that we’ve seen in previous seasons have broken down, so they’ve got these horses and carriages that are being drawn around instead of cars. Things are lit with oil lamps. People are using different kinds of weaponry. There’s a real grittiness to it that I think will be fun and fresh for the viewers.”
We got a glimpse of that on Thursday with the release of a trailer tease, showing Maggie and Daryl searching for gas on a deteriorating rural road, and a ramshackle tent community lit only by kerosene lanterns and campfires. A photo has also been released depicting Michonne on horseback, leading a group of survivors with wagons.
Fans will learn about this "new world" today with the release of the Comic-Con trailer. Fear the Walking Dead lays claim to Hall H at 11:15 a.m. PT/2:15 p.m. ET, followed by The Walking Dead panel, which will wrap up at 1:15 p.m. PT/4:15 p.m. That's likely when we should expect the trailer to be released online -- in the closing moments of the presentation.
Yvette Nicole Brown will host the panel, which features stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, joined by executive producers Angela Kang, Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert and Greg Nicotero.
