Ahead of its midseason premiere this coming weekend, AMC has officially renewed The Walking Dead for a tenth season as announced by a new promo.
Shared on the popular survival horror series' official Twitter account, the promo shows the Whisperer leader, Alpha, with her signature hush as a soft voice announces that the tenth season will premiere sometime in October.
While the ninth season had struggled with lower ratings than its preceding seasons and endured the loss of series regulars Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, it remained popular with viewers and critics alike, with the fresh creative direction by new showrunner Angela Kang receiving particular acclaim with the series undergoing a multi-year time jump immediately after the departure of main protagonist Rick Grimes.
The ninth season was similarly reported to be the most illegally downloaded series of 2018, underscoring its lasting popularity, if through illicit means.
As the Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment adaptation continues to move in a new direction, the characters will face a new threat in the sinister Whisperers who made their full introduction with the midseason finale this past November.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. The series returns for the second half of Season 9 on February 10.
