Season 11 will adapt storylines from The Walking Dead #175-#193, featuring a faction from the comics called The Commonwealth. Glimpses of Commonwealth soldiers can be seen in the above production trailer. Juanita "Princess" Sanchez (Paola Lazaro), who debuted in Season 10, is also expected to play a vital role in the show's final season.

The upcoming season will also feature other key characters related to The Commonwealth, such as Michael James Shaw's Mercer, the de-facto leader of the Commonwealth's military. Actor Lauren Cohan will return as series regular Maggie following her Season 10 return. The final season will also include Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride and a possible return for Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes.

Filming for The Walking Dead's eleventh season began in February after the AMC show faced a production delay due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Walking Dead's final season will consist of 24 episodes, spread across a two-year period. Showrunner Angela Kang stated in a prior interview that "the stakes will be high -- we'll see more zombies, tons of action, intriguing new stories, never-before-seen locations and our groups together in one community for the first time, trying to rebuild what the Whisperers took from them." Although the series conclusion will follow the final major arc of the comic, it is currently unknown to what extent the show will deviate.

The decision to end The Walking Dead came from the AMC network, as opposed to the showrunners or those involved with the show's creative process. While the show's cancellation is one that came as a surprise, even for the actors involved, The Walking Dead Universe will continue to live on in the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead, an upcoming spinoff series featuring Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier and a potential animated series.

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews. Season 11 premieres Aug. 22 on AMC.
