Survios and AMC finally revealed the release date and a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming VR game The Walking Dead Onslaught. The announcement comes just in time as fans of the AMC series anxiously await the highly anticipated Season 10 Finale on October 4. Following the game's digital launch, PlayStation VR physical editions will also be available.

Veteran players of the past The Walking Dead video game series have high expectations for the new release. Premiering in 2012, Telltale Games' critically acclaimed episodic video game series was praised for its strong narratives and choose your own adventure style. Due to its positive reception, many are wondering if Survios' VR game can match it.

The Story So Far

Onslaught picks up after the Savior War devastated Alexandria. Daryl Dixon is the star of the campaign mode. Players will experience his intense encounter with a mysterious stranger firsthand. To play as other familiar faces like Rick Grimes, Michonne, and Carol, enter the Scavenger Mode. Here, players can collect resources to rebuild their community, upgrade and modify memorable show weapons, and unlock new quests. But caution is recommended as relentless walker hordes roam outside Alexandria's gates.

Despite being set in The Walking Dead universe, the storyline is separate from the AMC series and Telltale video game series.

Gameplay

Using VR to transplant players into the bodies of Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes makes for a realistic first-person shooter experience like none other. Players are tasked with rebuilding Alexandria, which includes gathering essential resources like food and fuel. Challenges are delivered in letter form and contain requests to find specific items, missing Alexandria residents, or community resources.

As with any zombie video game, blood and guts are to be expected. From the gameplay trailer, Onslaught appears to have a decent weapon arsenal, showing off a variety of pistols, shotguns, and machine guns. Melee weapons range from knives, axes, and swords, ensuring effective tools are available for zombie skull bashing. Trips outside of Alexandria will allow players to discover new weapons and collect the resources needed to upgrade them.

Weapons can be equipped based on preference. Some players may prefer distance engagements while others aren't afraid to get up close and personal with melee options. Either way, each weapon will have unique traits and required upgrade resources. Sticking with the Walking Dead universe's rules, ranged weapons are louder and tend to attract enemies. In contrast, melee weapons can be used to perform silent kill attacks. So, choose loadouts wisely.

With The Walking Dead Onslaught's release right around the corner, fans should prepare their VR headsets. Although it appears players are limited to characters like Daryl and Rick, weapon loadout customization offers aspects of an RPG (role-playing game) unique to most first-person shooters.

Developed by Survios, The Walking Dead Onslaught will be released for PlayStation VR, Steam VR and Oculus on Sept. 29.
