Comic creator Robert Kirkman provided an update on the productions of the film adaptations for The Walking Dead and Oblivion Songstating both projects are still steadily on their way to the silver screen.

During a digital panel for Comic-Con@Home 2021, Kirkman discussed two of the most anticipated film projects based on his work: The Walking Dead spinoff movies and an onscreen adaptation of Oblivion Song. When asked by a fan about the status of both projects, Kirkman assured viewers that the films are still in development with pre-production moving slowly behind the scenes. There are also no release dates to announce as of yet. However, Kirkman added that many of the behind-the-scenes developments have excited him, and he is eager to share news about the projects soon.

When discussing The Walking Dead films, which will feature the return of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, Kirkman said plenty of developments are happening behind the scenes that he wasn't yet allowed to disclose. While he expressed frustration at his inability to reveal everything to the fans right away, Kirkman said that updates on the films' production could be coming in the near future, even going so far as to state that the news could have been revealed before the conclusion of Comic-Con.

"Andrew Lincoln is amazing. I miss seeing Andrew Lincoln running around as Rick Grimes," Kirkman said. "I can't wait until we're filming this thing. And when this thing is coming out, it's gonna be awesome. Everybody's working very hard to make this thing as good as it can be."

When The Walking Dead TV series premiered on AMC in 2010, the show followed the story of Rick Grimes, a primary character in Kirkman's comic book series. Grimes remained the show's lead until 2019 when his story diverged in the finale of the show's ninth season. His journey was set to continue with the production of a film trilogy released in theaters, but details have been scarce since the announcement. Earlier this year, Andrew Lincoln hinted the first Walking Dead film could begin production soon, though Kirkman did not confirm anything during his panel. He stated the production team is working hard on the film, but they don't want to rush it.

"We don't want a bad Rick Grimes movie, right? We want an amazing Rick Grimes movie," Kirkman continued. "And so everybody behind the scenes is making sure that when this comes out, it is worth the wait, and it is actually the special, character-building Rick Grimes journey that everybody wants it to be."

"Every now and then something super exciting happens, and then it goes away," Kirkman added, reiterating how the directors have expressed interest in helming the film, though none have committed yet. "We've got to wait until things are solid, moving forward, a little bit closer to actually happening before we can actually reveal things."
