WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 9 episode "The Obliged," which debuted Sunday on AMC.

The ninth season of AMC's The Walking Dead has seen Rick Grimes' leadership over the Hilltop community erode in the face of mounting pressure and in-fighting as star Andrew Lincoln prepares to leave the series after portraying Rick since the popular Image Comics adaptation's pilot episode.

The ending to the series' most recent episode, the fourth episode titled "The Obliged," has been posted online by the network after first airing last night. And the cliffhanger ending may have just set up how Lincoln's long-running protagonist ultimately leaves the show.

While leading a herd of walkers away from Hilltop on horseback, Rick's horse is startled casting him off on to a concrete slab where he is impaled on a nasty-looking piece of rebar. As the gravely injured former sheriff struggles to recover, the ravenous horde continues its unrelenting march directly towards him.

With Lincoln's final episode as part of the cast confirmed to be this coming Sunday, the fifth episode of the season, ominously titled "What Comes After", may provide the lonesome death of Rick Grimes.
