The Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan shared what sort of relationship Maggie Rhee and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan Smith will have in the upcoming spin-off series, Isle of the Dead.

In an exclusive interview with CBR, Cohan was asked to give a little tease as to how Maggie and Negan will interact in the new show, after it was noted that Maggie seemed to be becoming less hostile towards the former leader of the Saviors. "They are two people that are very much still not friends who are going to be seen in this new terrain," Cohan said. "You'll see elements of each of their characters that will be new and challenging, and it's going to be awesome."

The announcement of a spin-off starring the two survivors took fans by surprise as Negan famously killed Glenn Rhee, Maggie's husband and the father of her child, Hershel. However, CBR highlighted that Maggie said that she was beginning to trust Negan in The Walking Dead's latest episode, seemingly setting up their relationship in the spin-off.

"It was pretty shocking, but I knew that it's true," Cohan said when asked what her initial reaction was to Maggie's supposed burgeoning trust in the reformed antagonist. "It's true that in the thing that she's needing [Negan] for in that moment, she trusts him to do it. Beyond that, we don't have to decide right now. At this moment, when I need somebody to keep Hershel safe, especially because she now knows Annie and has this instinct about Annie...That kind of makes her trust Negan more. I think both because of how Annie's affected him, but also because they will both be there, I think that it's a hard decision, but it's a decision that had to be made for Maggie at that moment to go off and do what needed to be done with Hornsby, and keep Hershel safe in the meantime."

The 11th and final season of The Walking Dead premiered in August 2021 and will run for a total of 24 episodes. While the cast and crew recently celebrated the series wrapping up, Cohan and Morgan are not the only ones who will remain in The Walking Dead universe. Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will reprise their roles as Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier respectively in another spin-off that has yet to be titled. An anthology series exploring the backstories of individual characters has also been announced, titled Tales of the Walking Dead.

The first 16 episodes of Season 11 of The Walking Dead are available to stream now on AMC+. The third part of the final season is scheduled to air sometime in 2022.
