With AMC’s The Walking Dead concluding its “All Out War” storyline on Sunday with the Season 8 finale, eagle-eyed viewers think they have already spotted the arrival of the next antagonists to the hit drama.
Negan and his Saviors have troubled Rick Grimes & Co. since the sixth season, but the bat-swinging villain was brought to his knees in Sunday’s episode, “Wrath.” Now, as The Walking Dead looks to the future, there are already whispers of the Whisperers for Season 9.
The finale kept everyone occupied as the various communities banded together against the Saviors, but during the episode’s big battle sequence, there was a hint of what’s to come. As well as seeing a horde of walkers, which might hide the Whisperers within, fans picked up on a series of poles around the edge of the battlefield. For those who don’t know, the Whisperers from the long-running Walking Dead comic use similar poles to mark their territory.
Introduced in The Walking Dead #130, the Whisperers are a fan-favorite group of survivors who disguise themselves with skins from walkers to be able to roam among them. While there were once fears the AMC drama would skip the Whisperers storyline and continue to move away from the source material, former showrunner Scott Gimple confirmed they will appear, at some point.
“Wrath” left some fans disappointed by its lack of major deaths. However, if Season 9 follows the comics, it could see Khary Peyton’s Ezekiel with his head mounted on one of the Whisperers poles.
With the Whisperers comes the big question of who will play their psychotic leader Alpha. From Junkyard Jadis to Kim Dickens’ Madison from Fear The Walking Dead, everyone has their own theories on who Alpha could be or whether Kang will cast someone completely new in the role.
