When it comes to a television show that is based on comic books or in the world of genre horror, it is often fun to look for possible Easter eggs that could tie it to other beloved properties. It is also a lot of fun for fans of comic books to watch scenes very carefully to try to find Easter eggs that homage either events from the comics or things that are to come. For The Walking Dead, there are a ton of these Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the long run of the hit AMC zombie television series.

What is great about The Walking Dead is that there are Easter eggs that hint at things to come and there are others that call back events from the past. There are many instances where the show pays homage to the creator of the comics in Robert Kirkman, an influence of the series in George Romero, and personal influences such as Stephen King. While there are many things that the showrunners add to the series that are very obvious, there are also many that only hardcore fans will catch and others that only eagle-eyed viewers will even notice before they disappear from the screen. Here is a look at 20 Walking Dead Easter eggs that many people missed.

20 THE WHISPERERS

Whisperers on The Walking Dead

The Whisperers have finally arrived on The Walking Dead but they were hinted at a few years back by a character that isn't even on the main series anymore. Way back in the Season 3 episode "Clear," Rick and Morgan met up for the first time since Rick left Atlanta. Morgan was clearly driven mad at the time -- losing his wife and son -- and he was rambling about a lot of things. However, one thing that he said was clear foreshadowing for this season of The Walking Dead.

Morgan said he saw "people wearing dead people's faces." Fans of the comic books knew exactly what Morgan was talking about since the books had introduced the Whisperers, who wore the faces of the dead in order to walk among the zombie herds safely.

19 TYREESE HALLUCINATION

Tyreese from the Walking Dead

In the Season 5 episode "What Happened and What's Going On," Tyreese had been bitten and he started to hallucinate. He was feeling the pressure of losing friends and family members and he blamed himself. While he was dealing with these hallucinations, he started to hear a radio broadcast that happened to have a man with a British accent delivering the news.

That voice offered up tales of devastation in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, including stories of revenge attacks, cannibalism and other acts of violence. While that is all horrific, the Easter egg here is that the voice belongs to none other than Andrew Lincoln. While Lincoln plays a southern man in the show, he is actually from London and used his real accent in this scene.

18 IS THAT LUCILLE?

In a Season 4 episode of The Walking Dead, the survivors were all separated when they left the prison after their battle with The Governor. Fans of the comic books knew good and well that the next major villain to come along was Negan -- who was arguably the best villain in the entire comic book series. When Beth was walking along, she ran across some dead bodies and eagle-eyed viewers noticed a baseball bat lined with barbed wire on the ground beside them.

While there is almost no chance that baseball bat is Lucille, it is clear that it was put there as foreshadowing to the arrival of Negan and The Saviors a few seasons later. Now, a more direct bit of foreshadowing was when Glenn saw photos of people with their heads bashed in -- something that was clearly a nod to Negan coming.

17 DECAYING TITLES

In what was simply a stylistic decision, the producers of The Walking Dead have had some fun with their opening titles for the show since its first season. The first year of the show had the title for the series itself looking nice and pristine. However, every season since the show premiered, the titles have started decaying along with the rest of the world.

The words started to lose their color and soon they began to chip away and lose parts of the letters as the years wore on. This was something people online started to notice after a while and it was clear that the producers were doing it for a reason. This season, with a new beginning for the show, the entire logo has come back to life -- the decay replaced with green life.

16 STEPHEN KING

stephen king under the dome suffer the little children

The man who ran the first season of The Walking Dead was Frank Darabont and he really brought the comic book series to life on the small screen. He also added a touch of his own fandom to the series when he had Rick Grimes work for the King County Sherrif's Department. Darabont named the county after Stephen King.

This is a big deal for Darabont. For those who don't know his history, Darabont got his first chance to make a movie thanks to Stephen King's Dollar Baby program and that launched his film career with his following movies, The Shawshank RedemptionThe Green Mile and The Mist. King helped kickstart Darabont's career and he added an homage to the Master of Horror here in the first season of the show in return.

15 THE SCRIPTURES

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

On the fifth season episode "Strangers," the survivors ended up at Father Ezekiel's church and found an interesting situation. Ezekiel was alone in the church, having refused to allow his followers in, and the group found one man alone surrounded by his belief in God. On the board in the background were five Bible verses. Interestingly, these verses all had an eerily similar theme.

A fan on Reddit took the time to look them all up and they involved rising from the dead, returning to life, being unable to pass on, and living among the dead. The books of the Bible ranged from the Old Testament in Ezekial to the final book of Revelations. While not really meaning zombies, they all tie into the themes of the show.

14 DALE'S SPEECH

TWD Quiz Dale RV

In Season 5, The Walking Dead finished with five episodes that were one-word titles. Those titles were "Remember," "Forget," "Spend," "Try" and "Conquer." While most fans were paying close attention to the idea of time, with the watches that were given as gifts and all the clocks set to particular times, few people spotted the connection between these five titles and time.

They all came from a speech given by Dale way back in Season 1 -- when he was talking about the gift of a watch. The Spoiling Dead Fans discovered this and reported that, In that speech, he said the watch was not given so that "you may remember time, but that you may forget it ... and not spend all of your breath trying to conquer it."

13 IT'S FLYBOY

There have been a lot of references in The Walking Dead to George Romero's movies that introduced the world to the zombie as they are known today. Before Night of the Living Dead, zombies were completely different beings and it wasn't until Romero created them that the walking dead as they are today came to be.

One of these moments of homage came in the Season 3 episode "Say the Word." The scene in The Walking Dead came when Merle was fighting in the Governor's arena, trying to survive, and a perfect duplicate appeared of Stephen "Flyboy" Andrews (David Emge) from Dawn of the Dead -- one of the survivors that perished and turned in the shopping mall. The shirt, pants and even the manner the head tilted while walking was a perfect ode.

12 MORGAN: THE STREET

Rick Grimes first met Morgan in Season 1 but they went their separate ways so that Morgan could stay behind and protect his son while Rick went looking for his family. In Season 3, Rick found Morgan and the two ended up going in different directions again, this time with Morgan being completely insane after losing everyone he loved.

However, Morgan was never forgotten and soon returned one more time -- this time to Alexandria, living as a pacifist at that time.  The Walking Dead chose to foreshadow his return in an interesting manner. There was a street in Alexandria that was showcased a few times in Season 5 with road signs. That street was called Morgan Street. Morgan finally arrived in the Season 5 finale.

11 JOHNNY DEPP

In the Season 6 episode "Not Tomorrow Yet," the survivors led an all-out attack on the Saviors' compound. Remember, this was before they knew anything about Negan outside of what the Hilltop told them, and it was this attack the eventually led to the end of Glenn in retribution for the merciless slaughter of strangers. However, with that said, there was also some fun moments along the way.

That included a celebrity cameo that wasn't really a cameo at all but was a fun Easter egg to catch for eagle-eyed fans. There is a scene where Glenn and Heath decapitate some Walkers to try to find a duplicate for Gregory's head. One of the sculpted heads the prop department made was of Johnny Depp, which was then used in that scene.

10 CREEPSHOW

creepshow 1982

The Season 5 premiere had a blink and you miss it Easter egg that paid homage to both George Romero and Stephen King. Romero directed a 1982 anthology movie called Creepshow that was written by Stephen King. With Romero as the father of the zombies and King as the Master of Horror, it seems just right that The Walking Dead would one day pay homage to that movie.

The fourth story in that anthology was called "The Crate" and that is where the homage came from. Part of this Walking Dead episode saw Rick, Glenn and company battling zombies when they passed a crate identical to the one from Creepshow with the exact same packing instructions written on it. The survivors are lucky they never opened it.

9 CHEROKEE ROSE

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

Daryl really started to show his humanity with Carol after she lost Sophia in Season 2, but before they found her in the barn. Daryl gave Carol a Cherokee Rose flower and then told her the story about how the women who were losing their children on the Trail of Tears would see these flowers growing up from their tears to represent the children they lost. Daryl then told Carol that this Cherokee Rose bloomed for her lost daughter.

Before the airing of the Season 6 episode "Always Accountable," Norman Reedus hinted that a moment would come in the episode that harkened back to a Daryl-Carol moment. That came when Daryl was lost in the woods and was losing hope until he saw a fallen walker with a Cherokee Rose blooming on its back.

8 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

In Season 6, Morgan was back and fans got to see where he went after losing his son and how he was able to regain his sanity. He ended up as a peace-loving pacifist, which also put him at odds with many of Rick's friends and companions. He also turned into one heck of a hand-to-hand fighter, trained by his own mentor Eastman.

There is a scene in "Here's Not Here" where Eastman is teaching Morgan the art of Aikido and Eastman is wearing an interesting shirt that says "Save the Terrapins." Breaking this down, Kevin Eastman is the co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a terrapin is a turtle, and this Eastman teaches Morgan martial arts -- making this entire episode an homage to the TMNT.

7 MORLEY'S

The Walking Dead pays clear homage to The X-Files, but only hardcore fans would likely recognize the moment. Fans who watched The X-Files know that the Cigarette Smoking Man was a clear antagonist who had one very distinctive vice -- as evident by his name. He also happened to smoke a fictional brand of cigarettes that was created for the series called Morley's.

In the season 5 episode "Consumed," Daryl finds an entire carton of Morley's. In Season 6, Carol finds some menthol Morley's -- the first time this flavor ever appeared. Now, it should also be noted that while The X-Files is the show that is best-known for Morley's, they have actually been the go-to fake brand in Hollywood since at least Psycho in 1960.

6 RED RIDING HOOD

little red riding hood

The Wolves appeared on The Walking Dead as the main villains in the first half of the sixth season. They led an attack on Alexandria and were the first threat there, although they didn't hold a candle to the Saviors. However, while they attacked Alexandria in the sixth season, there were plenty of hints that they were coming -- and for comic book fans to know who they were.

Fans of the comics knew all about the Wolves and there was an Easter egg in Season 5 that showed they were on the way. There was a man in a red poncho in "Conquer" that Daryl and Aaron were following. Later, he was found reanimated after being brutally taken down. What is interesting is the entire look of the man was similar to Little Red Riding Hood, which was clearly foreshadowing that the Wolves were coming.

5 TELLTALE GAMES HOMAGE

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

In the episode "30 Days Without An Accident," Rick Grimes met The Governor and things really started to get exciting -- especially for fans of the comic books who knew what that meeting meant. However, there was also a smaller Easter egg that was exciting for fans of the Telltale game The Walking Dead: Season One.

For fans of the show who have never played the game, it took place in a completely different location than the show with new characters. The main characters are named Everett and Clementine and they are located in Macon, Georgia. In this specific episode, Michonne is looking at a map with Daryl and mentions going to Macon, but he talks her out of it. That was how close the show and game came to almost connecting.

4 SCOTT IAN OF ANTHRAX

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

There have been a ton of cameos in The Walking Dead and there was even an appearance by one of the pioneers of thrash metal music. Anthrax is one of the Big Four of Thrash Metal, along with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, and the lead singer of Anthrax got his chance to appear in the zombie series.

The best part that a metalhead like Scott Ian could hope for is as one of the zombies, and that was what he ended up portraying. Originally, Ian got a chance to get made up to be a zombie in Weason 2 but that never aired and instead, he came back in the Season 5 episode "Remember" where he not only got to play a zombie but he got to attack Rick Grimes in the scene.

3 BUB

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

In George Romero's first zombie movie, Night of the Living Dead, it was mostly about people trying to survive a zombie attack. Dawn of the Dead made it more about people trying to stay alive, but also added in the fact that they could be turned. Day of the Dead added a new twist where it made it seem like maybe zombies could be trained and the zombie used for that idea was Bub, arguably the most famous zombie of all-time.

One theme of The Walking Dead -- especially with The Governor storyline -- was also training zombies and maybe rehabilitating them. Greg Nicotero said the biggest tribute they ever did would appear in the fourth season episode "Us," and sure enough they created a duplicate of Bub in the train tunnel scene.

2 ROBERT KIRKMAN EASTER EGGS

20 Walking Dead Easter Eggs Everyone Has Missed

The Walking Dead is based on the comic books by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore. However, while this is the most famous and popular comic book series he ever wrote, it isn't all he has done and there are a lot of fans of his other works as well -- including characters on the TV show. In Season 1, Carl wore a shirt that had the symbol for Science Dog on it.

In Season 4, someone gave Carl a copy of the comic book The Astounding Wolf-Man. However, there was also a blink-and-you-mis- it Easter egg in the bedroom of Sam in the Season 6 episode "Start to Finish." On the dresser are some toys and they happen to be four of the characters from Kirkman and Ryan Ottley's popular Invincible comic book series.

1 BREAKING BAD CONNECTION

Bryan Cranston Breaking Bad
BREAKING BAD: SEASON 5B

The Walking Dead might be the most popular television series in the history of AMC but it is nowhere close to being the most critically acclaimed series on the network. That would arguably be Breaking Bad and there are a lot of clues that indicate the worlds from the two television series are actually connected.

Daryl had a bag of narcotics in the season 2 episode "Bloodletting" that included a blue powdery substance that fans of Breaking Bad will immediately recognize. There was also a red Dodge Charger that Glenn stole in "Guts" that was the exact same color and year as one that Walter returned to a car lot and a general manager named Glenn. Also, Gale's crazy coffee maker from Breaking Bad showed up in Milton's lab in season three. These Easter eggs have made some people wonder if Breaking Bad is a Walking Dead prequel.
