Although David Morrissey bowed out of AMC's The Walking Dead in the midseason finale for Season 4, his role as Philip Blake/The Governor has had a long lasting effect on the popular zombie drama. Morrissey has now confirmed he'd still love to reprise that role in the future.

Red Carpet News asked the actor if he'd like to return to the Walking Dead universe. The 54-year-old replied, “I’d love to do that. As I say, I love the world, I love the genre, I love the character, so if the powers that be deemed it right to do it, I would love to.”

“Sometimes you walk away from a job, you think, ‘I’m finished with that character.’ Whereas the Governor, I don’t feel that," he continued. "I think there’s a lot more to mine, really."

As one of the hit TV series' first big villains, Morrissey played the unhinged leader of the Woodbury community and his antagonistic behavior formed a major part of the prison arc. The actor last appeared as the character in a hallucination during Season 5's "What Happened and What's Going On."

Unfortunately, both The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead are long past the Governor's gruesome goodbye, so it's unlikely he'll appear in one of those two shows again in the flesh. Another option is an adaptation of the Governor-centric prequel novel that was released in 2011. Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga's  The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor explored the origins of Brian Blake, known as Philip Blake in the TV series. However, with Season 4 of The Walking Dead adapting some of those stories, and especially the Chalmers family, there might not be much material left to cover.

Greg Nicotero has already teased that more spinoffs are coming to The Walking Dead, and with Andrew Lincoln tipped to lead his own trilogy of Rick Grimes movies, it seems like a logical place for Morrissey to pop up as the Governor at some point. However, fans of the Governor will have to wait and see whether Morrissey gets his wish.

Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC, The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Nadia Hilker, Dan Fogler, Angel Theory, Lauren Ridloff and Eleanor Matsuura
