After two months of waiting, the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead confirmed the death of Rick Grimes' son, Carl. Having been scratched by a walker, Carl held out as best he could and said his goodbyes before taking his own life to avoid succumbing to the virus. AMC also said farewell with the release of an "In Memoriam" video for the fallen teenager that following his evolution on the hit drama.

Played by Chandler Riggs, Carl isn't the first character to die on the series -- not by a long shot -- but he's only the second to receive an official tribute video; Steven Yeun's Glenn Rhee was the first. Previously, those who were killed off were remembered on the after-show Talking Dead, which highlights everyone who dies in that week's episode -- be they guest stars, walkers dispatched in unusual fashion, or series regulars.

Confirmation of Carl's death was met with disappointment from both fans and those involved with the show. In the gap between the winter finale and the show's return, Norman Reedus expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, as did Chandler Riggs' father. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, recently said he wishes the show explored the dynamic between the two of them in a way that was more faithful to the comic book source material.
