The CW's Walker, Texas Ranger reboot starring the Supernatural alum Jared Padalecki is so far failing to strike a chord with audiences receiving largely negative reviews on the popular review-aggregation website, Rotten Tomatoes on the day of its premiere.

The '90s cowboy/cop series that once starred the martial arts hero Chuck Norris, has been rebooted for the modern age as simply Walker. The series has, at the time of this writing, received a low 20 percent rating, officially categorizing the show as 'rotten' by various critics. The action procedural drama is set to launch on Jan. 21, and while the series has yet to receive an overall consensus from the audience, professional reviews of the pilot have largely come to the conclusion that the reboot has yet to find its footing.

Rotten Tomatoes has compiled reviews from reputable culture critics such as RogerEbert.com which described the series thus far as "shallow" and "simplistic," suggesting that the series "struggles to find its identity in the premiere." Several critics have made a point to praise the acting chops of the ex-demon hunter turned renegade cop Padalecki, despite their negative judgments of the show as a whole. The lead has been described as "charismatic" with an "easy-going charm," however that may not be enough to save a show that critics believe is generally incoherent and bland.

Whether these reviews will affect the current plan for the series to begin streaming exclusively on HBO Max at the end of its Season 1 run on the CW is yet to be determined. The deal in question came about after Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios' $1 billion output deal with Netflix for CW content ended in 2019 thus allowing CW content like Walker and The Republic of Sarah to eventually make its way to the streaming service.

The plot of the series pilot follows the recently bereft Texas Ranger Cordell Walker as he returns home to his two teenage children in Austin, TX, after being away undercover for two years following the suspicious murder of his wife. Walker is adjusting to his new role as a widower and his new partner Micki Ramirez (Lindsey Morgan) in the Texas Rangers, with whom he finds some unexpected common ground.

Walker stars Jared Padalecki, Lindsey Morgan, Keegan Allen, Mitch Pileggi, Molly Hagan and Coby Bell. The series premieres Jan. 21 on The CW.
