Mitch Pileggi, who's likely best known for his role as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner in The X-Files, also played a brief but important part in another "mythology" series, Supernatural.
In the Season Four episode "In the Beginning," the angel Castiel sent Dean back to 1973 Kansas, where he met his parents as teenagers and discovered that his mother Mary and grandfather Samuel Campbell (Pileggi) were hunters, too. It's a poignant and revealing episode, as Azazel -- the Yellow-Eyed Demon -- killed Samuel and his wife Deanna before the Winchester brothers were born, and killed Mary when the boys were young. (The demon also briefly possessed Samuel during "In the Beginning," but that doesn't really tug at the ol' heartstrings, does it?)
So what triggered this walk down Supernatural memory lane? This report by Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, who says sources have confirmed that Pileggi is in talks to reprise his role in Season Six, "on a potentially recurring basis."
How that might happen, I have no idea. Okay, I have some idea: It's not as if Supernatural has ever shied away from resurrecting dead characters. However, will Pileggi be playing Samuel Campbell or the demon Azazel ... who's also "dead" (killed by Dean)? With Heaven and Hell left in turmoil following the events of the Season Five finale, it's certainly possible both realms are belching up their inhabitants.
But, hey, I'm fine with whatever excuse the producers come up with to bring back Pileggi -- just as long as he gets to share screen time with the returning Jim Beaver.
