After it was first announced a year ago, Dimension Films has put a date on Mark Wahlberg's "Six Billion Dollar" man. Variety has reported that "Six Billion Dollar Man" will arrive in theaters on December 22, 2017.
Wahlberg will play the titular Six Billion Dollar Man, an update on the original "Six Million Dollar Man" TV series that ran on ABC from 1973 to 1978. The classic series starred Lee Majors as Steve Austin, a NASA astronaut whose body is outfitted with six million dollars worth of bionic enhancements and replacements following a catastrophic crash. The enhancements give him a number of powers, including super strength, speed, vision and more. Wahlberg will play an updated version of Austin.
Production on the "Six Billion Dollar Man" will begin in September 2016. The action film comes from writer/director Damián Szifron, known for the Spanish black comedy "Wild Tales," and will be produced by Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Bob Weinstein. In the statement, Szifron conveyed his affection for the action genre.
“Writing the screenplay was such a fantastic ride and embarking on this journey with Mark, Bob and Stephen to take this story to a whole new level is simply spectacular,” said Szifron. “Growing up, these kind of films left an indelible mark on me and now it feels so good to be making one.”
“I’m thrilled to assemble The Six Billion Dollar” for the big screen with the likes of Bob Weinstein and Damián Szifron,” added Wahlberg in the statement to Variety. “We look forward to creating a Steve Austin for the 21st century.”
