Wachowskis May Not Be Involved With New Matrix Film After All

Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the filmmakers behind The Matrix trilogy are not actually involved with the reboot in development after all.

Last week, John Wick director Chad Stahelski said, “I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved.”

However, Slashfilm has published a statement saying that Stahelski, who was also stunt coordinator on The Matrix, stated the Wachowskis were part of the project, was speaking hypothetically.

While he said that he would be happy to return as a stunt coordinator for another Matrix film, it's currently unclear where it is in the production pipeline or if it will be a Morpheus-centric prequel.

In 1999, The Matrix starred Keanu Reeves as Neo and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. Neo, a hacker, finds out the world he lives in is a simulation created by machines that conquered the Earth. Morpheus, who thinks Neo is the prophesied One that he is in search of, recruits him and acts as his guide and mentor.

That film was followed by two sequels -- The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions -- that met with mixed reactions and The Animatrix, a collection of nine short anime films that expanded the Matrix universe.

Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum stars Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry, Ian McShane, Mark Dacascos, Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Mantzoukas and Anjelica Huston. The film opens May 17.
