When the full list of nominees for the 2012 Will Eisner Awards was revealed last week, fans and creators alike noticed the omission of the "Best New Series" category.

"The judges chose to not have the New Series and Painter categories this year because they didn't find enough contenders that reached the level of quality they were looking for," Eisner Awards Administrator Jackie Estrada said in a statement paired with the nominee announcement.

Comics writer -- and CBR columnist -- Ron Marz responded via Twitter, saying, "Nothing stopping the rest of us from recognizing New Series. If you like something, tell everybody about it!" So, in order to help recognize the standout new series in 2011, CBR opened up nominations for the "Best New Series" award to fans, industry professions and creators over at the CBR Forums. Over 150 individuals submitted their nominations for "Best New Series" with 89 different possible nominees. Participants were asked to list their five favorite contenders from 2011 in order of preference, starting with the top choice at #1 and working their way down to #5. Limited series are not eligible and at least two issues of the series must have been published in 2011. CBR allowed the inclusion of rebooted titles such as "Batman" and "Daredevil" based on the Eisner's own history which has seen titles like "Invincible Iron Man" and "Buffy: Season 8" win Best New Series in recent years.

The inclusion of the New 52 allowed DC Comics to dominate the category with 39 of the nominations going to New 52 titles while books from Marvel Comics comprised 12 nominations. Had the Eisner Awards Nomination Committee chosen to include the "Best New Series" award for this year's ceremony, it's possible the inclusion of the New 52 would not have given other books a chance, which may have disappointed a large segment of readers. However, had the committee chosen to exclude the New 52 from the category, there would likely have been many disappointed DC readers.

Other publishers were also well-represented in the nomination process with notable nods to Image Comics' "Green Wake" by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Riley Rossmo; Dark Horse Comics' "Angel & Faith" by Cristos Gage and Rebecca Isaacs; BOOM! Studios' "Snarked" by Roger Langridge; IDW's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz and Dan Duncan; and Dynamite Entertainment's "Kirby: Genesis" written by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross with art by Jack Herbert.

After closing the nomination period, the candidates were tabulated on a point system with five points given to each #1 ranked series, four points to #2, three points to #3, etc. After the tabulation was over, the top ten books advanced as the final nominees. There was a four-way tie for 10th place, increasing the number of nominees from 10 to 13. Head over to the poll to vote for your favorite series! Voting ends at 11:59 PM Pacific on Thursday, April 12.
