That Voltron movie you've been waiting to see forever? You're going to have to wait a little bit longer, sadly. For now, it appears that plans for a feature film focusing on the robotic "Defender of the Universe" are out the window — but a television series is taking its place.
World Event Prods and Classic Media, the companies holding the rights to the Voltron franchise, have announced that they'll debut a new series titled Voltron Force on Nicktoons next year. Twenty-six half-hour episodes will be produced. The plot sounds awfully similar to the original Voltron series, centering on "five space explorers who pilot robotic lions that combine to form Voltron, an invincible guardian sworn to defend the Universe." It's noted that the new show will remain faithful to the old one, but "new recruits" will be introduced to fight alongside previously established characters.
As for why the feature film isn't happening right now, producers revealed that screenwriters (including the most recent scribe, Justin Marks) have been unable to lock down the right tone for a Voltron movie. Additionally, the rights holders feel more confident reintroducing Voltron through television and, more importantly in their eyes, new toys.
"It's an exciting way to introduce the brand to a generation that isn't familiar with Voltron," said Ted Koplar, president of WEP.
