Voltron Assembles For Video Game Series

Voltron fans unite and rejoice because, come this fall, the beloved franchise returns — in a manner of speaking. Variety revealed today that developer THQ plans to release a series of video games based on the popular ’80s cartoon.

Like the series Voltron: Defender of the Universe, the game centers on a team of space explorers who each pilot a robotic lion. In times of crisis, these lions interlock and form the sword-swinging giant robot Voltron. World Events Productions, which holds the rights to Voltron, made the deal and has been working to bring back the series in other mediums.

A new series Voltron Force premieres this fall on Nicktoons in conjunction with the first game’s release. WEP and its licensing representative Classic Media have stuck a deal with Mattel for a new toy line based on both the original cartoon and the upcoming series.

Between a video games series, a new show and even a toy line, it looks like the only thing Voltron needs now to fully assemble across all mediums is a feature film.
