Readers will see a horrifying new take on the Vision, Apocalypse, and others in Marvel's Dark Ages this fall.

The new event from writer Tom Taylor (X-Men: Red, All-New Wolverine) and artist Iban Coello (Venom, Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade) promises to offer bleak versions of Earth's mightiest heroes when they "unite against a new threat - and fail". The latest promotional art by Ryan Stegman (Venom, King in Black) shows us more of what the event will cause for the popular Avengers member, as well as an appearance by the major X-Men villain.

Marvel has already teased how other heroes would fare and the appearance of new villain, the Unmaker, but here, the Vision appears to have seen better days and more battle than usual. His costume is tattered and torn, his mechanical skeleton and skull underneath shining through. This terrifying appearance is only highlighted by the gem in his head and his eyes, which radiate with energy.

Stegman posted the full art on Instagram to promote this new vision for the Vision. "The direction on this one was to just to bust Vision up," he said. "I don't know the full story so I don't know how we end up here, but it seemed like an awesome idea."

Apocalypse on the other hand, seems to be less battle-damaged and embracing might similar to that of DC's Darkseid. The artwork paints him as a menacing force while he glares down at the reader, hands behind his back.

The cityscape in both images lies smoking and destroyed, as Vision looks upon a world of crumbling buildings and pillars of smoke, the buildings that rest beside Apocalypse standing cracked and torched. Of course, the Marvel Universe has seen its fair share of damage over the years, even with the recent King in Black event causing the world to be engulfed by symbiotes. What makes this event seem different though, is that not a single light is on in any of the buildings.

Even though King in Black plunged the world into darkness as it was enveloped by a symbiote dome, there was still power, as heroes met in lit bunkers to care for the wounded and strategized a new plan using technological communications with others fighting elsewhere. The world depicted in Dark Ages only appears desolate, the world not having gone dark because it is covered by the symbiotes, but dark because there is nothing left, no power of any kind.

Dark Ages #1 goes on sale September 1, 2021 from Marvel Comics.
