Although originally scheduled to premiere in January 2020, Violet Evergarden: The Movie ultimately premiered in theaters on September 18 2020, having been delayed by both the arson attack on producer Kyoto Animation's headquarters and by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The film sold over 1.45 million tickets across Japan and made 2.1 billion yen (roughly 19.2 million USD) during its theatrical run, making it Kyoto Animation's second highest grossing anime movie, behind A Silent Voice.

Animated and produced by Kyoto Animation, the studio behind classic anime A Silent Voice, Hyouka, K-On! and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and directed by Haruka Fujita (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!: Heart Throb, Sound! Euphonium) and Taichi Ishidate (Beyond the Boundary, Nichijou, K-On!), Violet Evergarden premiered on Netflix on January 11, 2018. The series immediately received critical praise and has become one of Netflix's most successful anime adaptations.

Violet Evergarden tells the story of Violet, a former child soldier and amputee, who sets out to understand the meaning of love after the death of her superior officer Major Gilbert Bougainvillea. Equipped with advanced prosthetic arms, Violet trains to become an Auto Memory Doll, female ghostwriters who clients come to for assistance in writing personal letters. As an Auto Memory Doll, Violet encounters many people from different backgrounds and social classes and begins to understand the varied and complicated human emotion of love.
