Vincent D’Onofrio made a huge promise about Daredevil: Born Again.Appearing at Salt Lake FanX 2022, the actor reprising his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the upcoming MCU series for Disney+ teased fans that they won't be prepared for what's to come. "You guys have no idea what you're in store for with Born Again," D'Onofrio said. "And I know a little bit more than you guys. During that next series, you're not going to be thinking about anything but the next episode. I promise."
For three seasons, D'Onofrio earned acclaim for his human approach to the role of the Kingpin on the original Daredevil series for Netflix. When the streamer canceled the series in 2018, D'Onofrio was confident that Marvel Studios would call him back to reprise the role in future MCU projects. His co-star and friend Charlie Cox, however, had serious doubts at the time.
"For years, we would just speak as friends. The show had ended, and everything else had moved on, so we were just mates," Cox said. "But [D'Onofrio] would always say, 'They're going to call us.' And I'd get off the phone and be like, 'No, they're not, buddy. It's over. Let it go. Too much time has passed.' So he was right all along. I really thought he was delusional about that (laughs)."
D'Onofrio would troll MCU fans on social media for the next three years. Finally, in 2021, the actor reprised his role as the Kingpin on the Hawkeye series' finale episode, where he was revealed as the head of the Tracksuit Mafia. Cox would return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil that same year when he cameoed in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The two actors are set to reunite for the Echo series on Disney+ before the release of Daredevil: Born Again.
Kingpin May Become the Mayor of NYC
While MCU fans have to wait until 2024 to see what D'Onofrio is teasing, rumors suggest that Born Again will adapt the Mayor Fisk storyline from the comics. Additionally, the series will carry over the dark and violent direction of the Netflix series by aiming for a TV-MA rating. This would give D'Onofrio plenty of opportunity to play the Kingpin as viciously as he did in the past.
D'Onofrio expressed his full commitment to playing Kingpin for the long run. He's been reported to perform the character's voice for the animated Spider-Man: Freshman Year series for Disney+. Speaking of the wall-crawler, D'Onofrio is just as interested in Kingpin facing Spider-Man on the big screen as the fans are. "I want it as much as everybody does, so we'll see," D'Onofrio said.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on Disney+ in Spring 2024 and will run for 18 episodes.
