D.J. Caruso is set to direct the long-awaited "xXx" sequel, "Xander Returns," star Vin Diesel has revealed. However, there's a catch: He's not quite sure when the film will start shooting.

“I’m excited as hell about 'xXx,'” Diesel told io9.com. “D.J. Caruso is directing it, which is exciting. The big question now is which will race to production first now that F. Gary Gray is on ['Fast and Furious 8']? Will 'xXx' race to production first or will 'Fast' race to production first?”

Caruso's credits include "I Am Number Four," "Eagle Eye" and "Disturbia." He's reportedly attached to direct "G.I. Joe 3" for Paramount Pictures.

Diesel announced in August that the follow-up to 2005's Diesel-less “xXx: State of the Union” would finally begin production in December. However, plans for the final trilogy of Universal's "Fast and Furious" franchise have clearly complicated matters.

The action star headlined the 2002 original as an extreme-sports enthusiast/stuntman who becomes a reluctant spy for the National Security Agency, assigned to infiltrate a group of terrorists. While the film received mixed reviews, it grossed more than $277 million worldwide, leading Columbia Pictures to greenlight a sequel, which was made without Diesel or director Rob Cohen. It was a box-office flop.
