Both Marvel and DC Comics have a vast array of interesting and nuanced villains that each have their unique motivations. Doctor Doom is a narcissist that nonetheless greatly cares for Latveria. Deathstroke is an assassin with a code that, despite doing it for money, still is fixated on his reputation and legacy. Thanos has his love of Lady Death and a deeply sadistic personality. Darkseid just wants to control everything with the Anti-Life Equation.

However, there is a contingency of villains who just want the money. They're less interested in power, reputation, or some higher moral purpose. They just want the coin, and those villains are compelling for their own reasons.

10 The Scavenger Is A Man Looking For Wealth Under The Waves

Scavenger in Aquaman

Peter Mortimer is a regular thorn in the side of Aquaman, as he is a violent treasure hunter who has looked for wealth under the sea. This has led him to Atlantis and to cause all manner of trouble while looking for artifacts and advanced technology.

The Scavenger is armed with a powerful and reinforced diving suit that has allowed him to fight the likes of Aquaman. However, he is just a petty thief at the end of the day and always finds himself outmatched.

9 Electro Has Only Ever Used His Power To Get A Nice Chunk Of Change

Electro Sinister War Spider-Man

Despite having an inordinate amount of power thanks to his ability to absorb, control, and emit vast amounts of electricity, Maxwell Dillon has only ever been interested in a good payday. Unlike other Spider-Man rogues like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Kraven the Hunter who have their sights set on something a bit more complicated, Electro has only ever wanted money.

The only time his aims have deviated from that is when his powers went out of control and eventually disappeared. From there, Electro did seek to regain his power, but that ultimately led to Max being killed and replaced by Francine Frye.

8 The Absorbing Man Is A Powerful Avengers Villain With An Eye On Cash

Absorbing Man fighting the Hulk

The Absorbing Man, aka Carl "Crusher Creel", gained his power to turn into whatever material he touches, and later gain superpowers from touching other superpowered beings, from none other than Loki, God of Mischief. This led Absorbing Man into conflict with Hulk, Thor, and the Avengers over the years. However, all Carl ever wanted was enough money to live an easy life.

During Secret Wars, Absorbing Man actually fell in love with the superstrong Titania, and the two have maintained a relatively steady relationship ever since. Crusher Creel has had moments of moral clarity, such as when he helped Black Bolt escape the Jailer at his own expense and his current stint with Gamma Flight alongside Titania.

7 The Rhino Is A Musclebound Brute Interested In A Good Payday

A close up of Rhino from Spider-Man

The Rhino, aka Aleksei Sytsevich, was a member of the Russian mafia who was coaxed into undergoing genetic experimentation which ultimately gave him immense superhuman strength. Aleksei was then given a massive armored suit and became the Rhino. From there, he became a frequent threat to Spider-Man and even tussled with the Hulk a couple of times.

However, this was only ever to get a good payday. He even worked for the Kingpin for a time to serve this purpose. Unfortunately for the Rhino, he often found himself stuck inside the Rhino suit for long periods of time, and that was the only thing that ever distracted the Rhino from wanting money. Like the Absorbing Man, he's had moments of moral clarity and is less brutal than many of Spider-Man's other enemies.

6 The Scorpion Has Only Ever Been A Thief And Mercenary Looking For Cash

Scorpion on a wall

Like the Rhino, Mac Gargan underwent experimental mutation and was put in a superpowered suit. However, Gargan's first mission wasn't robbing or stealing--it was killing Spider-Man. He tried to do this several times over the years and found himself stuck inside the Scorpion suit through most of it.

Eventually, Gargan was freed but found himself stuck with a different suit: Venom. This led to his time on the Thunderbolts and part of Osborn's Dark Avengers. However, he lost this suit as well and has since become the Scorpion once again--only to throw that away in a mad bid for vengeance against Eddie Brock (the only time money has been unimportant to Gargan).

5 Copperhead Is Just A Snake-Themed Thief With An Eye On Money

Copperhead and Catwoman

Copperhead started his career as a Batman villain but has gone on to menace the Justice League and others over the years. He was initially an unnamed contortionist inside an armored snake suit armed with venom, and he proved to be a thorn in the side of many heroes in his quest to get a decent payday.

After the New 52 reboot, Copperhead was reimagined as a mutated snake-man and joined the Secret Society of Supervillains. This led to the Crime Syndicate invasion, during which Deathstroke turned on the Secret Society and killed Copperhead.

4 The Wrecking Crew Just Wants To Break Things And Get Paid

Wrecking Crew

The Wrecking Crew was also imbued with power by Loki. It started with the Wrecker being given an enchanted crowbar with which to fight Thor, but the Wrecker was given a team when three other men touched the crowbar as lightning struck it. Since then, the Wrecking Crew has been about breaking things and getting paid, often fighting the Avengers, the Hulk, and Thor.

Thunderball, aka Dr. Eliot Franklin, has been the exception to this rule. He's actually a brilliant man who allowed himself to be roped in by the Wrecker. These days, Dr. Franklin works as a scientist in Wakanda after being given a chance at redemption by Black Panther.

3 The Penguin Is A Crime Lord That Just Wants To Be The Richest In Gotham

The Pengiuin from Batman holding an umbrella

The Cobblepots had a long-standing feud with the Wayne Family, and this led the Cobblepots into many illegal schemes and, ultimately, poverty. However, Oswald Cobblepot wasn't resigned to this fate, and he became the crime lord known as the Penguin.

Since then, he has done everything he can to expand his wealth and power, and this has led to many clashes between Penguin and Gotham's protector, Batman.

2 Taskmaster Is An Expert Fighter Who Gets Paid To Kill

Taskmaster #1

Taskmaster, aka Tony Masters, is a man with the impeccable ability to recreate any action he sees. He initially used this to train henchman how to fight for a hefty fee. Unfortunately, the Avengers discovered this operation and shut it down.

Since then, Taskmaster has lived the life of a mercenary, being hired to kill and steal at the behest of others. He is only interested in the payday, and this has led him to help the likes of Darren Cross, Hydra, Kraven the Hunter, and the Kingpin.

1 Captain Cold And The Rogues Are Just Thieves With A Code

Captain Cold Weather Wizard, Golden Glider, Mirror Master, and Heat Wave

Despite their long-standing feud with the Flash, Captain Cold and his allies in the Central City Rogues are thieves at the end of the day. They don't want to kill or hurt anyone; they only want money. Even their weapons--Cold's freeze ray, Heatwaves flamethrower, Weather Wizard's Weather Wand--are just means to get more money.

Even when the Rogues gained superpowers in the New 52, they only used these powers to steal. Admittedly, the Rogues were encouraged to take over Central City when Lex Luthor tried to spread Perpetua's gospel of Doom, but Cold and the Rogues eventually retreated back to their old ways after their scheme was stopped by the Flash.
