Avengers: Infinity War saw Thanos erase half the life in the universe in an event now known as The Decimation. However, the road to that event was paved by one man: Helmut Zemo, played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Daniel Bruhl.

That's right. People like to blame Peter Quill/Star-Lord for letting his emotions take control of him, leading him to attack Thanos just when victory seemed certain. However, we're not blaming Star-Lord. Instead, we want to look at how Zemo made the snap possible.

In Captain America: Civil War, Zemo worked to destabilize the Avengers, and he succeeded. By the end of Civil War, the superhero team was divided. Although it's hard to tell if the Avengers could have beaten Thanos together, the group would have definitely posed even more of a challenge to the Mad Titan's horrific plan.

Check out the video below for why we feel that Zemo is responsible for Thanos' snap.

Zemo is a particularly compelling villain, as he doesn't have any superpowers and instead relies on his ability to manipulate situations to his advantage. The character's backstory sees him losing his family during the Battle of Sokovia during Avengers: Age of Ultron. Zemo survived the events of Civil War, meaning that he could appear again in the future. Bruhl, for one, thinks that his character could absolutely appear again in the future, and it might just set him up for a team up with some other villains.

Despite his plan succeeding, Zemo did bring Ant-Man, Spider-Man and Black Panther into the greater fold. Although Spider-Man and Black Panther seemingly died during the snap, a lot of fans think that Ant-Man and his experience in the Quantum Realm will play an important role in defeating Thanos when Avengers: Endgame rolls around later this year.
