Tony Stark is responsible for kicking off the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008's Iron Man. The character has remained integral to the MCU and is still its flagship movie. Robert Downey Jr. is the highest-paid actor in the franchise, which is itself the highest-grossing movie series of all time. However, it was a long journey for him to get from being the son of Robert Downey Sr. and Elsie Ann.

Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby, Tony Stark first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in 1963. He's one of Marvel's most popular heroes and played a key role in forming such groups as the Avengers and Illuminati. He eventually went on to become the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.. He's also appeared in various media, including video games and television.

At this time, there are a lot of fan theories that suggest Tony Stark isn't going to make it out of Endgame alive. However, there's definitely a good chance that he'll survive, though it's unclear what his role in the MCU would be going forward. There's some indication that he might have a child, and that kid could factor into how the MCU proceeds after Endgame. Still, losing the character would be a major blow to the MCU.
