At DC FanDome, fans finally got a first look at Matt Reeves' The Batman, which will feature the debut of Robert Pattinson as the titular Caped Crusader. However, that trailer also introduced fans to The Riddler (Paul Dano), who will serve as the movie's main villain. The footage featured The Riddler killing a man and leaving a clue for Batman, indicating this version of the villain is going to be much different than the versions that we've seen on screen in the past. In this video, we're going to break down this new sinister version of The Riddler and what his presence means for The Batman.

Previously, Jim Carrey played The Riddler in 1995's Batman Forever. This was a pretty campy incarnation of the The Riddler, and that's the version a lot of people recognize. In the comics, The Riddler is generally a villain who focuses more on trying to outsmart the Dark Knight than anything else. However, Reeves' take seems to be a pretty major departure.

Right now, The Batman is slated to exist in its own universe outside of the more general DC Extended Universe, and Reeves has plans for a trilogy starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight. However, both Michael Keaton (Batman and Batman Forever) and Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeJustice League) are set to reprise their roles as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming The Flash film, leaving some question as to just what state the DC multiverse will be in after that film.

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson. The Batman is set to be released in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.
