Avengers: Endgame will feature the returns of a lot of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, some of the characters likely to make their returns died in previous films, and -- although it's not clear at this time how they will return -- it's pretty clear that they'll play some role in the film.

A lot of these returns may be made possible through time travel, which many fan theories think will play a major role in defeating Thanos and undoing his snap. It doesn't seem particularly likely that a lot of these characters -- such as Tilda Swinton's Ancient One -- will stick around for long, as it would have pretty major implications for the MCU as a whole. However, time travel might present the chance to have some sweet and touching moments between our heroes and the people they lost.

Those characters killed directly from the snap will likely be revived in some way and play a role in the MCU going forward, which has pretty much been confirmed by Spider-Man: Far From Home and the sequels to Black Panther and Doctor Strange. However, those who weren't killed by the snap -- such as Gamora and Loki -- have much more uncertain fates, so it's possible that they might return only to make their final MCU appearances.
