VIDEO: What Nobody Realized About the MCU's Mantis

Pom Klementieff as Mantis

Mantis joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, serving Ego the Living Planet. However, there's a lot to the character that you might not have gleaned from her appearance in that film and Avengers: Infinity War.

Created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck in 1973's Avengers #112, Mantis has a pretty long history in the comics. However, it's hard to draw parallels between her on-screen appearance and her comics counterpart. In the comics, the character is a master of martial arts and quite formidable. Much of this didn't translate to her on-screen appearance. Mantis' portrayal caused quite a bit of controversy, and Englehart was unhappy with the way she appeared in the film.

Although a number of fans have taken Mantis' on-screen appearance to critique the character for being weak, she actually does a lot in the MCU to prove that she's a pretty formidable ally when fighting against Thanos and Ego, even if she never quite lives up to her comics counterpart.

Despite seemingly dying as a result of Thanos' snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it seems likely that Mantis will return to the MCU. There are currently plans for a third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, though the firing of director James Gunn has delayed the film indefinitely. There's some indication that the reshoots for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame are leaning heavily into Guardians of the Galaxy characters.

Despite his brother's firing, Sean Gunn -- who plays Kraglin -- has confirmed that Disney is currently planning to use James Gunn's script, though it's unclear how much of it will change between now and when the cameras actually start rolling.
