After playing a key role in Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) didn't reprise her role for Thor: Ragnarok. The departure was justified in that third film as Thor and Foster having broken up, though things are a little more complex than that. There's no clear indication that Portman or Foster will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe any time soon, but there's a lot you might not have realized about the actor and her character.

There's a lot of drama behind the scenes of the Thor films that many fans don't realize. Portman was actually reticent to return for Thor: The Dark World, but she changed her mind when Patty Jenkins signed on to the project. However, Jenkins eventually left Thor: The Dark World and went on to make Wonder Woman for DC instead. This ended up having quite an effect on the film, as the swap reportedly frustrated Portman, who then found herself unavailable to return for reshoots.

Check out the video below for more of what you might not have realized about Jane Foster, how her departure might mean big things for some other characters and how she might return.

It's currently unknown if Portman will reprise her role as Jane Foster in the MCU. Portman herself has expressed a lot of uncertainty about returning, so don't be surprised if she never comes back. However, both Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and star Chris Hemworth want to return to make a fourth film in the series, so it's entirely possible that she might return in some capacity down the line. If she does reprise her role, one can only hope that she'll take up the mantle of Thor herself, like she did in the comics.
