First appearing in the mid-credits scene for Thor: The Dark World, Benicio del Toro plays the Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since his debut he has appeared in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, though he was an illusion in the latter. Despite all those appearances, the character is actually one of the oldest in the Marvel Universe, meaning that there's a lot about the Collector that fans might just not know.

Also known as Taneleer Tivan, the character gains the Reality Stone at the end of Dark World. The choice to give him the Reality Stone might have been an intentional move by the Asgardians so as to protect the immensely powerful item. It might also be part of a long-term plan by Loki to collect the Infinity Stones for himself, though it's unclear at this time whether he would actually do that, considering Marvel's recent revelation that the Mind Stone might have been influencing him during the events of Avengers.

It's unclear how the Collector will factor into the future of the MCU. Del Toro confirmed that Collector survived both Thanos' attack and the snap. Still, the events of Infinity War certainly would have left the character reeling. However, it seems likely that he'll play some role in the MCU going forward. His brother Grandmaster made an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said that he wants to bring the two character together onscreen. If the two brothers get together, it's likely that we'll see even more Elders of the Universe in the future.

The characters appeared together in Brandon T. Snider's The Cosmic Quest Volume One: Beginning, which is considered canon. In that book, the two brothers reunite in a quest to gather the Infinity Stones in the aftermath of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok.
