When Hugh Jackman debuted as Logan/Wolverine in 2000's X-Men, he proved one of the movie's most popular characters. Eventually, Jackman received his own spin-off series, which ended in 2017's Logan, which told the story of Wolverine's final days. However, those movies were created by Fox, who at that time held the rights to the X-Men, Fantastic Four and a number of other Marvel characters. Disney has now re-acquired the rights to those characters, meaning they will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sooner rather than later. When that time comes, Marvel Studios is going to have to find a new actor to replace Jackman, who has said he won't return to the role. In this video, we're going to go through how Marvel Studios has to go about replacing Jackman.

Although Jackman is somewhat synonymous with Wolverine due to his wonderful, long-lasting performance, superhero movies have successfully replaced actors in the past when rebooting franchise. Tobey Maguire, for example, was many people's definitive Spider-Man. However, both Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland have played Peter Parker in live-action, becoming beloved by many in the process. As such, it's not impossible for a new actor to take over a role and succeed.

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, it's not totally clear just what shape the next phase of the MCU will take. While there's a good indication the characters Disney acquired from 21st Century Fox will soon arrive, there's not much solid information on just when or how that might happen. Right now, there's some indication Madripoor -- an island closely associated with Marvel's mutants -- will play a role in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, though there's no indication they'll actually make their first appearance in that Disney+ series.
