The first trailers for the upcoming MultiVersus fighting game teased a huge roster from across Warner Bros. Discovery's huge catalog of characters. Characters like Batman and Shaggy could be teaming up against Steven Universe and Iron Giant in the multiversal video game.

Of course, this isn't the first game that has united different worlds of the video game multiverse. Games like Super Smash Bros. and Marvel vs. CAPCOM have been crossing over universes for years. However, there are quite a few video games that allow players to explore alternate realities and parallel dimensions in ways that don't always require battling each other to death.

The Mortal Kombat franchise of fighting games began with a tournament. Earth's best fighters entered to defend the planet against other-dimensional warriors. Earthrealm was just one of many dimensions that were threatened by the expansion of Outworld.

Players explored a few different realms over the franchise including the hellish Netherrealm and heavenly Edenia. Mortal Kombat's warriors were able to cross between the realms to fight in new locations and arenas. Mortal Kombat even strangely crossed over with DC heroes from another reality in 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

9 Serge Explored Parallel Worlds To Uncover The Mystery of His Death In Chrono Cross

Following the success of Chrono Trigger and its use of time travel, developers released Chrono Cross with a new twist. A teenager named Serge shifted into a parallel reality where his counterpart had drowned 10 years earlier.

Players explored these parallel worlds to uncover the mystery of Serge's death while adding new characters from each reality to the party. It was impossible to gather every character in one playthrough of Chrono Cross. This brought fans back to further explore the parallel worlds of El Nido and experience alternate endings.

The third game in the fan-favorite franchise was actually a prequel called The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. This was the first game to incorporate alternate worlds, though this would become an ongoing theme in later games. Link discovered that Ganon after he corrupted the Sacred Realm with his magic to create a Dark World.

Players had to utilize the Light World and the Dark World in order to solve puzzles. Using the Magic Mirror or warp portals located throughout the game allowed players to move between worlds. The town of Silent Hill borders on reality and unreality which connects it to other universes or dimensions.

Fog World is aptly named as it is covered by a dense mist which brings to life the darkest fears of anyone caught there. Otherworld is a nightmarish realm of Hell filled with the most powerful monsters in Silent Hill. Otherworld can also twist and bend reality to match the tortured psyche of Silent Hill's visitors to further torture and traumatize them.

6 Kingdom Hearts United The Different Worlds Of Disney And Square Enix Characters

Players were introduced to Sora in the first Kingdom Hearts as his world was overrun by enemies from the Realm of Darkness. Armed with a Keyblade, he joined with Disney's Goofy and Donald Duck to defeat the Heartless and help find their missing king, Mickey Mouse.

Kingdom Hearts brought characters from the worlds of Disney and Pixar together with Square Enix properties like Final Fantasy and Einhänder. Fans could visit the Pixar worlds of Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. while allying with new characters. Fans are already discussing which new worlds they want in Kingdom Hearts 4.

5 Injustice United DC Heroes From Two Universes To Fight Against An Evil Superman

The Injustice: Gods Among Us universe of DC heroes is actually an alternate reality in the DC multiverse. In that world, The Joker caused Superman to unknowingly kill his wife Lois Lane and their unborn child. Superman went too far and killed Joker, resulting in the destruction of Metropolis. He then became a fascist ruler willing to do anything to keep the world "safe."

Batman and his allies were able to transport Earth-One heroes like Superman to the Injustice universe. They then joined the fight against the evil version of the Man of Steel. The success of Injustice led to a sequel called Injustice 2 that further explored the multiverse. Players could travel to different worlds to earn gear by fighting alternate versions of heroes.

4 Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark United The Movie And Video Game Universes

The third game in the Cybertron series of Transformers games gave fans the opportunity to play in the movie continuity as well. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark followed each continuity's hunt for the Dark Spark, an ancient artifact that was tearing holes into other dimensions.

Players were introduced to Ratchet's other-dimensional counterpart Rivet and her new ally Kit. They all joined forces as they attempted to stop an even worse version of Nefarious from using one of the best weapons in Ratchet & Clank. He planned to use the Dimensionator to conquer the multiverse, but he was stopped before he caused a dimensional cataclysm.

2 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Followed Four Characters From The Spider-Verse

2010's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was one of the first stories that saw Spider-Man cross into the Spider-Verse in a new way. After the Tablet of Order and Chaos was fractured during a battle between Spider-Man and Mysterio, four multiversal Spider-Men were tasked with recovering the pieces.

Players switched between The Amazing Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man Noir as they played through their respective universes. Each world had a unique art and play style. Shattered Dimensions was followed up with a sequel starring Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 called Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

The third entry in the BioShock franchise took the first-person philosophical shooter in an exciting new direction with BioShock Infinite. Players attempted to survive the floating city of Columbia in order to save a woman named Elizabeth.

They find themselves involved in a class war that turned into a mind-bending trip across parallel realities once Elizabeth's true power is revealed. Her ability to create dimensional tears unlocked a much larger story and a shocking plot twist no one saw coming.
