There is no lack of amazing games coming out month after month, from both AAA studios and well as indie developers, yet there are also hundreds of classic games that captured gamers with their incredible stories or gameplay that may never be experienced by newer generations due simply to them being outdated for the modern age.

While many classics can still be experienced as they are, some games are incredibly deserving of some modern updates, whether that be in gameplay or graphics, while remaining true to the core of what made those games great in the first place.

10 Chrono Trigger Should Be Experienced By A New Generation

Square Enix Chrono Trigger Campfire

Often considered one of the defining JRPGs of its era, Chrono Trigger has found a place in the hearts of fans on the merits of its incredible story, soundtrack, and characters. This is why it often finds a place on the lists of the best roleplaying games of all time.

Such a widely beloved game certainly deserves to be experienced by a new audience. As a game that relies on great storytelling, a game such as Chrono Trigger would do perfectly with a remaster, enhancing the graphics and soundtrack fidelity without changing the fundamental core of what makes the game great.

9 Silent Hill Is A Classic Of Horror That Could Use A Facelift

Harry explores the school in Silent Hill

Horror games as a genre really exploded as video games moved into a 3D space, spawning classics such as Resident Evil and, of course, Silent Hill. While the second and third entries in the Silent Hill franchise received remasters, the original never received the same treatment.

Much like the more recent Alan Wake Remastered, an atmospheric horror game such as Silent Hill would be an excellent opportunity to recapture the dark and haunting story of the game while making it much more playable for a modern audience.

8 Grand Theft Auto IV Had One Of The Best Stories In The Franchise

Niko From GTA 4 Walks Against City Skyline With Pistol In Hand

The Grand Theft Auto series may be most well known for its wild gameplay that is often matched by equally bombastic stories, but Grand Theft Auto IV was in many ways a much more personal and down to earth story, one that felt closer to a crime drama despite moments of insane action.

Playing through an enhanced version of this entry into the franchise would be a great way to hold gamers over until the release of the inevitable GTA VI. It would also provide newer fans a chance to experience the story of the dangerous and sympathetic Niko Bellic, one of the best characters in the entire series.

7 Banjo Kazooie Was Goofy And Fun And Would Still Hold Up Well

Nintendo 64 wasn't lacking in games of all different genres, but one of the most popular were 3D platformer games. Among them, Banjo Kazooie was one of the best, with a charming and colorful setting and enjoyable gameplay that made it an equal to many more established IPs.

It is no surprise then that this is a game people have been calling for to be remastered for a long time, and recently a project was put together by an incredible team of dedicated fans that showed what a remastered version of the game might look like, sparking even more interest in the possibility of seeing this game in the modern era.

6 Red Dead Redemption Is A Solid Game That Could Use A Few Upgrades

Red Dead Redemption 2 was a follow-up to an incredible original, featuring some of the most incredible visuals, storytelling, and aesthetics of any game in the modern era. While the first game was a standout for a time as well, the sequel took everything good about the original and made it better.

While Red Dead Redemption is still an incredibly playable game that holds up well, a remastered version that uses some of the elements of the enhanced engine used for RDR2 would go a long way towards bringing fans back to this incredible Western classic.

5 Super Mario 64 Is One Of Nintendo's Forgotten Classics

Mario facing off against Bowser in Super Mario Bros. 64

It might be a bit of a stretch to say that Super Mario 64 has been completely forgotten, but it has certainly been overshadowed by modern entries in the franchise. And considering that it was released over a quarter of a century ago, it is no surprise that Mario 64 has been somewhat lost to the annals of time, at least for audiences who came to the series in more recent years.

A remastered version of this classic would no doubt receive great acclaim from older fans who appreciate the nostalgia of one of the classic games of that generation, as well as introducing a whole new and younger audience to the game that set the stage for many of the Mario games to come.

4 The Caesar Franchise Took City Building Into The Classical Era

Caesar gameplay, building a city

While Sim City is the most well-known city-building game from the early era of computer games, the Caesar games were another highly acclaimed series that put the player in control of a Roman governor who had to manage the development and protection of cities in the era of Julius Caesar's Rome.

Remastering these games would be an incredible opportunity to revitalize the franchise, one that transported players back into a fascinating period in history. And, as with many games in the genre, updated graphics and minor tweaks to the game mechanics would go a long way towards making this game perfectly suitable for a modern audience.

3 Metal Gear Solid Invented The Stealth Game Genre

Solid Snake and Meryl

Although games with heavy stealth elements existed prior to the release of Metal Gear Solid, this was this game that built the genre, spawning many of its own sequels and countless other franchises inspired by what is often considered one of the most important games of its era.

While HD remasters of other games in the franchise have already been released, fans have long awaited a true remaster of the game that helped popularize the franchise, and there has been much speculation as to when Konami might finally release a remaster or even a complete remake of this classic game.

2 The Witcher 1 & 2 Tell Great Stories But Have Fallen Behind In Visuals

Geralt and Vesemir Witcher 1

CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is rightfully considered one of the best RPGs of all time, yet the original two games in the franchise, while excellent games themselves, don't receive anywhere near the same attention.

If the first two entries were remastered with modern graphics, it would give fans an opportunity to go back and play through the origins of Geralt of Rivia's journey, at least as far as the games are concerned. While The Witcher 2 still holds up relatively well, the original game could certainly use some updates both visually and in terms of gameplay, while still adhering to the excellent storytelling.

1 The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind Revitalized The Series And Deserves The Same

While the Elder Scrolls franchise may have existed long before the release of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, it certainly wasn't a series that had anywhere near the popularity it does now. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may be the game that skyrocketed the franchise to its current heights, but all of that was built upon the strong foundation laid down in Morrowind.

There is clearly an audience for an updated version of this classic as well, as fans have put incredible amounts of work into recreating both The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, as well as its sequel Oblivion, using the modding tools available in Skyrim.
