The video game industry has taken the opportunity to expand into a lot of modern platforms. Streaming services are starting to increase their level of adaptation to the small screen, while movie studios create additional stories based around the protagonists of these iconic games.

The world of comics has not been spared from this increased use of various multimedia platforms. In fact, many major video games have had some kind of comic book adaptation and a lot of these are actually incredibly well received. In every genre and from every console, these comics seek to expand the continuity of the games, often acting as prequels or sequels to open up the world further.

10 Mirror's Edge: Exordium

The original Mirror's Edge game was incredibly well received, prompting a sort of sequel/reboot entitled Mirror's Edge: Catalyst. This was met by fans and critics alike less favorably, which might be why its planned TV adaptation has since seemingly stalled.

With the sequel game trying to secure the legacy of the brand, a comic series was released focusing on protagonist Faith in the lead up to the plot of the game. Mirror's Edge: Exordium was far better received that the second game installment and gave fans a great portrayal of this complex character.

9 Injustice

DC Comics first partnered with developer NetherRealm Studios on the crossover fighting game Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. The game was successful enough for the two entities to continue working together, dropping the connection to MK altogether and instead creating a fighting game series focused entirely on the world and characters of DC. Both the original Injustice and its sequel wowed audiences with its varied roster, exciting premise, and original plot.

The Injustice comic books took advantage of the world that had been created, with a series being released continuing to explore Superman's corrupt rule over Earth. It filled in some of the gaps in the game and is widely considered to be superb in its portrayal of a very different DC Universe.

8 Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is back in the public eye thanks to her movie adaptation and a number of new games set in a rebooted era. There had previously been a Tomb Raider comic series that ran from 1999 to 2005, and it was rebooted in 2014 to coincide with the newest run of games and sought to offer another look at the newer version of the famous explorer.

The comics take Lara across the world on a number of different missions. With varying references to the new continuity of the games, these certainly seek to flesh out her story further and allow fans to enjoy some very different adventures.

7 Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed has been a largely ongoing video game title for some time. It has continued to develop through different eras and feature completely contrasting protagonists. Alongside this there have been a great number of books and a movie adaptation.

There's another film adaptation on the way which will try to mend the mistakes of the previous, but there's also a great number of comic book stories set in this world, which fans would love to dive into. With comics for almost every modern game release, there's a genre here for everyone, plus a number of interesting original stories.

6 Batman: Arkham

The Arkham video game series has come to be considered the definitive version of what a superhero console game can be. Naturally, considering DC is a comic book company, they also had a number of tie in comics.

Many of these fleshed out some of the villains and side characters further, for their stories to tie together a little more in the games. Others acted as prequel comics to set up the conflicts ahead. Regardless, all of the Arkham comics offer something unique and intriguing.

5 The Last Of Us: American Dreams

The Last Of Us is a beloved video game series that has only recently had its second installment. A couple of comic book series were produced to tie into the games, but the stand out is The Last Of Us: American Dreams.

It's only a four issue run but features some gorgeous art and a fantastic story created by the writers and producers of the game. They tie in seamlessly, with the comic and the video game actually playing off of one another to tell Ellie's story.

4 Mortal Kombat X

Much like the world of Injustice, NetherRealm turned to the world of comics multiple times over the years to tell some additional stories about their Mortal Kombat characters.

Mortal Kombat X linked heavily to the video game release of the same name and is widely considered to be the best of the comic book adaptations. This is set after the reboot of the timeline and includes many of the iconic characters that the game has come to establish.

3 The Witcher

The Witcher Comic

The Witcher is another franchise that has continued to expand far past its original medium. Starting out as a series of novels, the video games managed to bring new life to the characters, followed by Netflix making a very successful TV adaptation out of the franchise.

Naturally the franchise has also made its way to the comics where the stories follow Geralt as he continues to fight hellish creatures and utilize his magic in a world that rejects him. Thematically it's very complex, while also boasting some incredible visuals and storytelling.

2 Spider-Man: City At War

Marvel's Spider-Man for PlayStation 4— which just saw the release of a sequel starring Miles Morales— is another great addition to the Marvel video game catalogue and considered to be the best amongst many fans. The video game followed Arkham's lead and has been adapted into a small series of comic books.

The amazing costume design is on full display as the comics try to expand upon this version of Peter Parker's life further. It plays heavily into the video game, featuring many of the same villains and heroes with the events essentially playing out in the same manner as the plot of the console experience.

1 God Of War

God Of War has become quite the hit amongst video game fans, but its story wouldn't be complete without some kind of comic book that could tie more of the narrative threads together and help audiences get into the head of Kratos

This series from DC ran for 6 issues and is actually based on the original line of games that began on PlayStation 2 and concluded with prequel God of War: Ascension for PS3, before the 2018 soft reboot saw fans fall in love with these characters all over again.
