WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Captain Marvel, in theaters now.

Although there were initially plans to introduce the Skrulls in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, the race of alien shapeshifters didn't make its way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe until Captain Marvel. However, the versions that appeared in Captain Marvel are a lot different than the ones in the comics.

The Skrulls, which were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appeared in 1962's Fantastic Four #2/ Although Skrulls are typically depicted as villains, the movie definitely made sure to cast them in a much more sympathetic light.

Considering that Captain Marvel has already earned more than $900 million at the worldwide box office, it seems pretty likely that the movie will get a sequel. However, when exactly that sequel will be set is unknown. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has remarked that there are still more stories about the Skrulls to tell in the MCU, but it's not totally clear from those comments if those stories will take place between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, or if those storylines will involve the Skrulls in different scenarios.
