Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn introduced Roman Sionis/Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) to the DC Extended Universe, with the villain serving as the main antagonist of that film. Although a lot of his backstory is hinted at, there's also a lot that's left unsaid. Although Birds of Prey isn't particularly faithful to the comics, here's a lot from them that might inform how the recent DCEU film depicts the villain.

Created by Doug Moench and Tom Bandrake, Black Mask first appeared in 1985's Batman #386 and has followed that book's titular hero through his many different media iterations. The criminal mastermind is among the most dangerous in Gotham City and has continually posed a major threat to the Dark Knight. Much like Bruce Wayne, Roman was the child of wealthy Gothamites. However, his parents weren't nearly as good as Thomas and Martha Wayne, which partially accounts for his eventual turn to evil.

Although Birds of Prey has received a lot of positive responses from critics and fans, the film underperformed at the box office in its first weekend, leaving the future of any potential sequels and/or spin-offs uncertain. As of writing, the film has earned $145 million worldwide against a budget of $84.5 million, though it may still have a long way to go before it breaks even.
