Veronica Mars fans today enjoyed a miracle in the form of a surprise announcement from star Kristen Bell at Comic-Con International in San Diego. According to Bell, the fourth season of the show, which itself acts as a return after the series was canceled by The CW in 2007, is streaming on Hulu right now rather than waiting for July 26, the series’ original release date.
“We’re only here because you guys kept watching us,” said Bell at the series’ Comic-Con panel, explaining that she’ll keep playing the role for as long as she can. “I’ll play Veronica until everyone in Netpune is dead.”
The fourth season of the series picks up with Veronica still living in Neptune, now in her 30s and distraught she was never able to escape her hometown. Veronica is pulled out of her stupor, though, when a serial bomber begins terrorizing businesses in Neptune, prompting her to once again don her sleuth hat.
Series creator Rob Thomas said that the new season doubles down the mysteries the series is known for, rather than getting bogged down in Veronica’s soap opera personal life. Thomas said this was done to keep the series from becoming a “nostalgia show,” and that it could be the template for whatever Veronica’s next adventures end up being.
“I think of this as the bridge to whatever version of Veronica Mars comes next,” said Thomas. “There are personal life things that fans of the show want to see, and if we just stripped it, people might have felt let-down. This one is trying to steer them in the direction of the mystery becoming more of the lifeblood of the show.”
Veronica Mars Season 4 is streaming on Hulu now in its entirety.
